Welcome to the Corvette Forums at the Corvette Action Center!

Question: Number of 81s registered.

...If I'm not mistaken all Vettes produced at Bolwing Green start with 510 and all Vettes produced at St.Louis start 400...

Close enough to count. The first character following the plant code is the car line series code. It was a "4" for St. Louis Corvettes for 1981 and all have the 4. It was a "1" for the Bowling Green cars and all of them have the 1. 5 is the plant code for Bowling Green.

The consecutive unit number (5 digits) of a specific Corvette begins following the car line series code.

all of the '81 two-tone vettes were painted in bowing green
all of the '81 St.Louis vettes were 1 color

your vin says its a bowling green built vette!

In a way your right about all the two-tones being built in Bowling Green KY., but there were about 25 of each combination built in St. Louis in late 1980 prior to the plant opening in KY. :cool . But who knows, maybe the black book is wrong.

...Ok. So all of the 81's that were not painted at BG were painted at SL. Or was it the other way? :bash

Correct; the cars were built at two places. 81s assembled at St. Louis were painted at St. Louis. 81s assembled at Bowling Green were painted at Bowling Green. Two-toned 81s were built at each location. 81 production at St. Louis ran from August 1980 through the end of July 1981. The official closiing date of the St. Louis plant was August 1, 1981. 81 production began at Bowling Green on June 1, 1981 and continued through August and possibly part of September.
