I'm buying a 92 Conv Black LT1 this week and have been searching for information on hooking my computer up to my car for diagnostics.

I have a 97 GT Mustang that I'm getting rid of and have really liked the capability of using free software like freediag from sourceforge. I'd be thrilled if there was something like this for the corvette but have not found it after a weeks worth of search.

Specifically, I'd like to find:
1. A good guide that the list would recommend for doing diagnostics against the computer in my 92 vette.
2. Opinions about the best shop manual for a above beginner tuner. I'm fairly competent in a shop and have worked on a vette before, my step dad's 68.
3. A deeply technical manual explaining the communications protocol of the 92 vette. I'm a computer security engineer by trade and would like to use this opportunity to write some software to talk to the car.

Thanks for the feedback,
John Burkhart

I would, first, purchase the Helm's factory manual Then go to c4vettes.com for a basic look at your data line connector & related comnponents. I can't recall the Helm's webs site address off hand, but someone will have it.:)

I use Ease GM OBDI for my '89. It's range is from '82-'95. It has 58 paramaters it looks at on my powertrain alone but that is soley dependent on the "controller" in the car and how many the car has and if you have the adaptor to look at each and every 'controller'. It is what seperates the 'powertrain' from the 'body & chassis'.

You might want to try E-bay for a shop manual.

Thanks for the help. That's exactly what I was looking for.

I've read the protocol decription for OBD-II and it's a very simple setup. Sort of like playing catch or UDP.

Cheers guys and thanks again,
John
