Interesting...two threads on the same subject....an oil recomendation for an 82 bought by a friend.
What's listed in an 82s owner's manual is no longer made by the oil industry. Fortunately, virtually all of the engine oil available to consumers, today, is far better than anything suggested in 26-year old owner's information.
If the engine is stock, any 10W30 engine oil API certified SL or SM will be fine.
If the engine has any valve train modifications (such as higher lift cam, higher ratio rockers, increased spring pressure), an engine oil with higher phosphorous content is required. The cheapest way to get that is with a light truck diesel engine oil such as Shell Rotella 10W30 or Chevron Delo 400 LE 10W30. The best way to do that is with a premium synthetic such as Red Line 10W30 and, there are other choices between those two but, whatever choice you make for an engine with valvetrain mods, you need between 1000 and 1200 PPM phosphorous content.
