Has anyone ever tried using any oil additives (Z-maxx, etc) to help with older engines (85 coupe with 58K)? I was considering putting some in at me next oil change to help with the older valve seals (car apparently sat for a while before I bought it recently).

Are these good, bad, indifferent, smoke-n-mirrors?

:confused

thanks
Trey

Dont use them, ive never used them in my 86, and it has 133K, burns only 1 qt every 2500mi.

They can actually cause more damage than they prevent, its just a way to suck your money.

Ditto.

help with older engines

Help what?

RU burning oil? Any high quality oil has all the additives needed. Adding others will mess up that balance and/or cause problems/waste money.

U gotta problem? Fix it. U don't; don't.

I was once talked into having one of those hi-tec super slippery engine treatments done on a 5 series BMW. They filled the engine with the stuff, ran it for a while, and refilled the engine with new oil plus a quart of their additive. 300 miles later the crank froze at about 80MPH. The engine was a total loss. Before the treatment the car was burning no more than a quart in 1500Mi.

No more additives in anything I own, ever!

Just use Mobil 1, it works great.......:CAC

I agree. Stay away from any additive for automobile use. There are documented cases of additives that may cling to the metal surface and present a barrier to the additives in the oil that are supposed to prevent rust. Result; you may have a slicker surface (maybe not) but you will have some rust later. Mobil 1 takes care of all problems as well as anything out there.

My buddy is a mechanical engineer 25 yrs for Detroit Diesel. They did detailed controlled testing on all of the popular additives appx 1 yr ago and nothing came close to the protection of straight Mobil 1. Forget the lotions and potions. They are all crap.

;stupid

Normal oil changes are all you need.
Maybe that new higher milage formula stuff would help?

No mechanic-in-a-drum crap for me. If an engine has been wearing uniformly with a high-quality oil why throw the balance by dumping in a mystery snake oil?
Lots of additives can void warranties.
