The High Mileage just has some extra additives, they help with older flat tappet motors. I use it in my LT5's as they are flat tappet motors (no push rods)

Synthetic Oil | ZDDP

If I remember correctly, the high mileage oils are not a full synthetic oil. Mobil 1 oil is a full synthetic.

If it were my vehicle I would use the full synthetic Mobil 1.

howdy, was just looking at some mobile1 high mileage 10-30 and it is indeed full synthetic, question is why would you say to use the regular mobile1 and not the mobile1 high mileage stuff?

The key difference between "standard" Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 High Mileage is a higher proportion of phosphorous/zinc, 800/900-ppm vs 1000/1100-ppm. Zinc and Phos are the main components of "ZDDP".

The extra ZDDP is of interest to those with engines having flat tappet camshafts. If you have a roller cam, you don't need to worry about extra ZDDP unless the roller cam is part of some very exotic racing valve train.

As for the LT5 engine, it doesn't need any extra ZDDP either. Yes, the LT5 has flat tappet cams, but the engine has overhead cams directly acting on bucket tappets, not flat tappets working pushrods and rocker arms. The valve spring pressure in an OHC application is a lot less then in a pushrod engine so, even though the LT5 had flat tappet cams, because the spring pressure is much lower, the amount of ZDDP needed in the oil is less.

You are correct, my memory served me incorrectly (again), the high mileage is a full synthetic.

For lack of a better reason I would use Mobil 1 over the high mileage simply because it has proven it self for decades, and is even reasonably priced at Walmart in their 5 gallon containers. Plus Mobil 1 has the GM 4718M and GM Dexos certifications. No real correct answer here as I am sure that the Mobil 1 Extended is a good oil that you will have no problems with. Good luck with either choice. :)

thanx BTW its $22.66 at walfart, so that and prolly $10 for a decent filter, it don't get any better than that!!:D

Yeah, that's a pretty decent price for a full synthetic oil change. Don't forget a new crush washer or o-ring seal (which ever you have) for your drain plug also.

Ahh, Great-Wall mart. Don't shop there, myself, for other reasons, as well.

The Hi-mileage synthetics containers say they have certain additives beneficial to high mileage engines. :w

I don't frequent those zoos either but cant walk away from that oil price!
I think napa has it for $6.50 qt.

I am not good with pictures, but it is a sealing washer that installs between the drain plug and the oil pan to prevent leaks and they should always be replaced after usage. You can reuse the old one if you like and you may not have an issue, but since the plug is out and the oil is drained it is easy to replace and very cheap.

FWIW, I have made these for decades, with great result, from a plastic discard bottle. It is lots easier and much prettier, with once of those gasket-making punch kits. Not all filters come with new seals and my plastics do well when reused.

Better results come from thicker bottles, not milk bottles. :w
