After purchasing a new 2002 coupe I found that the car burns 1 quart of oil every 1500 miles or so. The dealer changed the piston rings and it still burns the same. Chevy tells me it is normal even after the piston rings. Does anyones else have the same problem with oil comsuption. Please contact me directly at bbibbs@yahoo.com

Thanks

I was worried about the oil burning too , but keeping an eye on it . I change my oil @ 2500 miles and it used maybe 1/2 quart , at 4000 I added 1/2 quart and @ 6000 I change it not needing any .
Thanks
Joe

There are actually two possible sources for the oil consumption issue; faulty rings and a leaking PCV system. Did your dealer check the PCV system when, or before, they did the re-ring?

GM considers consumption of over 1 quart every 2000 miles as excessive, so you are in the range (near the top of the range) for warranty repairs. A quick check can confirm if you have a PCV system leak... remove the accordion section of the air intake tube just ahead of the TB. Look at the inside of the tube and look at the part of the TB you can see (ahead of the blade). If you see any oil residue, then you have a leak in the PCV system. If this is the case, then the repair is quite easy. The leak is located in a fitting under the valley pan. Should take a good shop a couple of hours to fix.

Another potential area to check concerns the re-ring they did. When they replaced the rings did they follow the TSB TO THE LETTER? Or, did they replace ALL the rings? If they replaced all the rings, you can still have problems; they are only supposed to replace the rings identified in the TSB (#2 compression and top oil, I believe).
