Hi,
Last month I got my Vette inspected and had the service station change the oil. I purchased the oil, Mobil 1, 5 -30W and Mobil 1 filter for the change and supplied to them. I noticed the I have a small oil leak now which I didn't have before. I also noticed they used all 5 qts and the oil dip stick indicated it was slightly over filled. Do you think this sight over filling could cause a leak somewhere? I appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks,
Clyde

Did you have dino oil in before?
If so, syn oil will find leaks that dino couldn't get through
Were is the leak from?

I just purchased the car in November so I don't really know what oil was used in the past. The car calls for Mobil 1 so I would assume that's what was used. I really can't figure out where it is leaking from as of yet. Just today I crawled under and wiped everthing down and have not been back under to see yet. Do you thing it could be leaking because it was slight over filled. The owners manual says it only takes 4.5 qts.

I thought it was 4.5 quarts with old filter and five quarts with new filter, but I might be wrong.

Been using 5 quarts + filter for years never a problem Maybe some was spilled when being put in. All you can do is keep an eye on it.

Another possiability could be your oil drain plug is just loose and needs to be tightened.

OR, you could have what I have, a front crankshaft oil seal going bad. Look for oil to drip and puddle directly under the opti and drip onto the crossmember and from there on to the floor. I have had this leak for a while now and a VERY highly esteemed member of this forum who will go unnamed (Junk!) recommended one pint of AT-205. So I added it and it has been several weeks now since I have even seen the teeniest leak! I know this is just a stop-gap measure but it WORKS!! I had a major problem trying to buy it here in Atlanta as all the places that sell it only sell it to wholesalers. So I contacted a representative of the company and he apologized and sent me two free pints! What a guy! :upthumbs I was very grateful. I know there is a member here that will have a hissy fit over putting ANYTHING not OEM in an engine but it works and Junkie was right, again!

I don't know if this is your problem but look in that area.

Get back to us as to what you find.

Paul

Well, simple things first. The drain plug has a seal ring on it. If it's old, it will leak. I have to replace mine about every three oil changes. Just a cupulla bucks to replace. Put some white paper or clean cardboard on the floor. It will help pinpoint the leak. (BTW . . . with 5 Qts, you're only about 1/2 quart over. It shouldn't be enought to cause a problem or leak.)

Thanks for all your help! I have several area's to look at now.;)

I don't know if this will apply to your motor/oil filter , but if the filter gasket wasnt oiled when it was put on , it tends to chinch a little or not seal 100%. If the filter is overtightened , could be the same problem.
