The tape could be obstructing ... I've never had a problem using it & will continue to do so on tapered pipe threads & sending unit plumbing. You might check & see if you got the correct sender. It could be a sender for an idiot light and not for gage ... that'll sure cause a gage error. Or it could be for a gage but is not for your model car and may not be calibrated for your gage ... my first guess would be that you were sold the wrong sender ... that it's wrong and is for an idiot light. BTW, the genuine GM gage sender is the best for your factory gage because it's correctly calibrated for your gage.
