I am stationed in Italy and cannot get Mobil 1 for my baby. However, I have found a full synthetic made by Agip that meets BMW, Volkswagen and Porsche specifications for their engines. The weight is 5W-40. It does not say that it meets the GM specification required for our cars. Would I run the risk of voiding the warranty by using this oil?

Opinions on putting this oil in my car would be greatly appreciated.

What oil would they use if you took it to a local GM dealer there for an oil change? I would think that the local GM service would have a cross reference for a comparable brand.

tom...

The nearest GM dealer is about 2 hours away on a good day. My guess is that they can get Mobil 1 through the GM supply channels.

I liked it better in Germany where I could just walk into the BX (Base Exchange) and buy all the Mobil 1 I could carry!

Further Information

Here is the information from the labels of both oils

Mobil 1:
API/Service SL/CF
Exceeds API Service SL,SJ/CF
Meets ACEA A1/B1/A5/B5-02
Meets GM 4718M
5W-30

Agip SINT Evolution (full synthetic):
API Service SL/CF
API SL/CF
ACEA A3,B3,B4
Mercedes Benz 229.3
VW 502.00+505.00
Porsche
BMW Longlife-01
5W-40

bluecoupe -- thanks for the tip. Sent him an e-mail and am awaiting his response.

c5d -- Thanks for the offer but I don't think I have to go that route right now. I did find the shop I take my car to does have access to Mobil 1 but at ~$13 per quart! An oil change will cost me about 100-125 euros. Thats about $130-160 with the lousy exchange rate!

That's why the questions about the Agip Sint Evolution. I can get it for about $8 per liter and end up saving about $35.

We live in Aviano Italy too and have had similar issues with oil changes with our american car (Pontiac). Though it doesn't require Mobile 1.

We looked into shipping over oil and I believe it is a federal crime to ship any petrol product in the mail.

Get friends who frequent Germany to buy you a case or two when they drive up. That has helped us out quite a bit.

Just got word from AGIP Italy that the oil I was wondering about doesn't meet GM4718M. Oh, well. I guess it's $13 a quart for Mobil 1 till I caan find someone going to Germany.

GM4718M is the GM Corvette spec for synthetic oil. this oil is approved for Corvette

If you go to the service manual, it specifically states that an oil meeting ACEA A3 specifications is OK. I would use a synthetic meeting the ACEA A3 specification if I were in your place.
