Recent discussion of oil pump replacement, combined with my oil cooler installation, got me to thinking: how does the oil system flow? From the pump, through the filter, then to the engine? If so, should I consider installing a higher-pressure pump, to compensate for the pressure drop in the cooler (and all the lines to get the oil to the front of the car and back)?

MS,

It flows from the engines oil pump then thru the sandwich attachment then onto the cooler then returns to go thru the oil filter before going back into the engine.

You wont need an additional pump. If y ou use half inch oil lines, the pressure drop is not much. When i had my oil coolers (2) in front of the radiator, i piped them in series and never had a problem with pressure drop. I took them off recently, because i was cooling the oil too much . I use synthetic oil, keep the motor at 180 f water temp, and since my vette is used for light duty street use in outdoor temps of 85 degrees and lower... the oil just doesnt overheat. Frankly, an oil cooler is really only needed if youre going to race regularly and/or you are driving in very hot outside temps.

Thanks.

I'm mostly upgrading the cooling system in anticipation of future mods. 400-blocks run hot, so I want to have enough capacity to keep it cool, even in the middle of summer with the A/C on. I'm going to install a thermostat-controlled bypass valve on the oil cooler, so I won't over-cool the oil.

P.S., I tried to reply to your email on Monday, but the message got bounced back...
