Having just purchased a '66 coupe I noticed that the steering wheel has some play in it. When driving, I can turn the steering wheel from left to right about 3" and the car continues to go straight without any response. Is this normal? What will it take to repair it? There are no power options with this car and it's a base 327/300. I've been told that it may be the steering rag boot. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Look at the top of the steering box and you will see a nut over a stud. The stud has a slot in the middle of it for a flat head screwdriver. Loosen the nut with a 9/16 wrench and then turn the stud with a flat head. That should tighten your steering up.
In addition, have someone turn the steering wheel while you look at the rag joint coupler. If it is twisting wildly then that is your problem, if not then its the steering box.
If tightening the steering box screw does not work, then you will probably need to pull it and have it rebuilt. Its pretty easy to remove.

Report back when you have had a chance to take a look at it. I will be glad to help you as best as i can through posting.

RestoCreations,

Thanks again for the info. I didn't have a chance to look at it today because my wife and I were entertaining our grandchildren. I don't remember me being that rambunctious when I was their age. :W

I'll check it out on Saturday and get back to you with news of my adventures.

Again, thanks............:beer

RestoCreations,

I couldn't wait until tomorrow and went out and did what you suggested. Voila'!! Looking at all the other areas of the steering column it appears that everything has been replaced with new parts, rag joint too. I looked underneath the front end and it appears that all the rubber grommets and a few other parts have also been replaced with new. Looks like it was just that minor adjustment of the steering box.

Thanks again..........Brian
