One or Two Temp Sensors on a 1979?

I'm starting a new thread on this topic on a recommendation from one of our Mods.

Some really botched around with the wiring on this project. I've located the single green wire for the temp guage sensor on the drivers side bank but I can't locate the wiring or the circuit for the auxilary fan. My assembly manual shows that there may be two senors, one on the drivers side bank for the gage and one on the right (passengers) side for the auxilary fan. (If I'm reading the drawings correctly). My problem is that the original motor was an L48 (blown up) and an auxillary fan was not an option on the L48 model. The motor I installed is a 1976 L82 and the second senor hole is plugged. I'm assuming that the wire harness was the same for the 1979 L82 and the L48. Does anybody know what wire(s) or colour(s) goes to the fan. From what I've read this set up seemed to change in the 1980 and up to a single dual sensor. I purchased a new Auxilary fan extension harness. so I can go either way I suppose. Can I ask a little guidance from any 1979, 1980, 1981 owners?

Thanks,
Steve

from teh 81 shop manual......

it shows a 12 gauge blue coming from teh temp sensor and a 12 gauge pink going to a 30 amp circuit breaker.

the temp sensor is/should be located between the 6 & 8 in the head.

For 79, two wires come from the temp switch. 12 ga. blue which goes to the fan and a 14 black that goes to ground. Like 81Corvette said, 12 pink/white from the fan to the circuit breaker and the switch is located where he said, between 6 and 8.

Is there two senors then? One between 1 and 3; one between 6 and 8? Is the 30 amp breaker located in the fuseblock? What is it identified as?

Sorry about the questions but I'm afraid I don't have much of the components in place. I'm hoping to have a good schematic by the weekend.

Steve

the 1/3 sensor goes to the dash gauge (i think, i can check the manual after work) 6/8 is a sensor that open and closes the fan circuit.

the breaker is in teh fuse box. it should be labeled fan.

things may have changed between 79 and 81, this info is for 81's only, and thats my disclaimer

OK, stuck my big head up under the dash and had a look. On the 79, the pink/white wire from the fan plugs into the fuse box from the FRONT. Lower left bottom corner. Protected by a 30 amp fuse just above it.(just below the 20 amp turn/back up fuse). It is labeled "elec. fan" on the fuse box but it is NOT labeled anything on that skematic I sent ya last week. Hope this helps.
And the temp gauge sender IS the one between 1 and 3.
And from what 81Corvette says, it sounds like the 80 up fan sending unit may be self grounding, no separate ground wire. Not sure here, tho.

Well there appears to be a pink/white wire connected to the fuse panel front and a 30 amp block fuse but there doesn't appear to be a correponding wire coming out of the back of the fuse panel on the firewall. The only wires I see coming out of the harness that I see that are cut and not connected to anything are a yellow and an orange (I think 14 ga with long leads). Any ideas? If the yellow and the orange aren't for the aux. fan perhaps you might know what they're for. I'm suspecting the old alarm horn which is not in place anymore. Thanks for your help. Hopefully I'll have a schematic soon, it happened to get snagged up somewhere in the UPS strike.

Steve, the pink/white wire plugged into the front of the fuse box IS the wire going to the aux. fan. Follow it, it will go up under the dash and through the firewall to the fan. These fans were probably an afterthought back in 79. The temp. switch on the motor completes the ground.
The loose yellow and orange wires; are they hanging under the dash? Do you have an original radio and/or power antenna? If not, might be where they once went to. Will do some more looking in the 79 manual to see if I see any other possibilities.

Thanks Mike,

I'll look deeper bt the Pink white appear to go behind the fuse block but don't come out anywhere.

The Yellow and orange wires are hanging inside the left fender up near the firewall. When I got the car it had no radio and it only had a stock antenna rod. From what I've traced it appears to have never had a power antenna. I think most of the trouble I'm having here is that the car was originally an L48.

Thanks for your help,

Steve

Traced the Pink/White. It goes to the engine harness and down to the starter. I haven't checked as to where it hooks up down there though.

That pink/white wire DOES plug into the fuse box at the very lower left? I'm wondering why it is even there if the Vette was originally an L48, tho.
The yellow and orange wires in the fender near the firewall probably ARE for the alarm horn. I replaced an alarm horn on one of my 78s but I recall only one wire. The 79 manual shows an orange wire to the horn and a yellow wire from the horn to the anti-theft flasher which is back inside under the console.
Will take another look under the 79 dash and also under the hood tomorrow.
