For those that purchased the OnStar system with their C-6 Corvettes, be cautious regarding the equipment configuration. Nothing in the GM sales literature, window sticker, or order information informs you that the vehicle was shipped with a generation 5 analog only system. As of Dec 31, 2007, analog is terminated within the US in favor of digital systems. OnStar generation 6 analog/digital systems should have been shipped with these systems but were not. If you wish to take advantage of the Verizonwireless/OnStar offer and you have a generation 5 unit, you are screwed. I have contacted the dealer, OnStar, and Chevrolet customer care on this issue. The dealer is clueless, OnStar claims that the dealer will handle upgrading the system, and the Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center sends a long email telling me that I got what I paid for...an OnStar analog system and that I might try seeing what OnStar can do.

I don't know about others, but I believe this sort of high-handed arrogance from GM is unacceptable. If there is enough interest, I am inclined to pursue a class action suit; if not, my own.

I find it extremely unfortunate that such a fine piece of engineering should be undone by ignorant and archaic management attitudes. Please respond to this poll with an indication of your interest in this matter.

Thanks.

HI there guys!

I don't want to hi-jack the thread by any means, but I have OnStar on my '04 Trailblazer with voice recognition. The problem we're having (and OnStar is aware of it also) is that the system doesn't recognize the word "Two".

C4C5 Specialist, are you aware of any fixes for this?? OnStar said to try and say "Do" or something close to the word Two.

Thanks in advance

Chris

HI there,
If you have this concern, it is a common issue among Onstar users.
888.4.onstar has a section for strictly voice recognition problems and solutions.
I would suggest that you contact that department of Onstar and see what you can accomplish.
Most of my customers have been able to resolve the concerns there.

How did you figure if you have the anolog or digital system? I am curious about the system in the '05 Suburban we bought a month ago? By the way it came in real handy when I had severe drivability issues 800 miles from home and I could have OnStar scan the engine and tell me what was wrong.

Thanks for the tip C4C5specialist. I'll give it a try.

I just picked up my C6 last week and NOW noticed a small photo copied paper sheet included in the rather large gift bag I was given. Here are the ways to tell if you have Digital System....

Do you have a "white-dot" button? In ONStars literature, they show it is a small white dot on a left side button. (I have a 3/4 circle with a vertical dash at the top. This doesn't seem to be what I was looking for)

This is the copy of the steps ONStar says to figure out what type of system you have...

Process 1:
Press the white-dot button
(If you do not have this button, you have an analog-only system)
If the system responds with, "READY", this is an analog-only system.

Process 2:
Press the white-dot button
If the system responds with "ONStar Ready" and continues with up to 14 other options like "Dial, Call, Directory, and Virtual Advisor". This system is Analog/Digital-Ready.

Process 3:
Press the white-dot button
If the system responds with "ONStar Ready" and you hear one of these options, "Advisor Playback, Digit Dial, or Digit Store". This system is Analog/Digital Dual Mode.

ONStar states that by February 2008, wireless carriers are not required to offer analog service. ONStar goes on to say that if the wireless carriers providing ONStar coverage choose to drop analog all together, will this impact Analog systems. They carriers might choose to still support analog thus not affecting analog ONStar systems.

And this brings me to my original point, all c6 has voice recognition and the dual system, analog and digital, so the analog point is really moot on c6
As for the rest, Every single Onstar system can be determined by the useful information given above by Tyson.
Thank you, c4c5

I'm not sure where C4C5 got his information, but it's incorrect. OnStar can have either a white dot or telephone symbol. Mine has the latter. Either way it is not definitive. If you want the realy answer, press the OnStar buttion itself, and ask the specialist if you have an analog or analog/digital dual system. I did that and was advised (twice by different specialists) that mine is analog only.

Don't take my word for it, C6 owners please ask OnStar yourself.

My post was and is correct.
By the way, voice recognition has nothing to do with it.

HI there,
Your system transmission at the time can only be seen, not the actual hardware in the system.
What I would suggest, because you believe that you do not have the digital system.
Take your c6 to the dealership.
Ask them to get the hardware number, right off the VCIM in the right rear of your car.
Call Onstar technical assistance, not 8884ONSTAR, give them the number, and they will tell you, based on this number, if you have digital/analog, which I am sure you do.

I'm sure willing to investigate this. Is the VCIM accessible by me in lieu of a trip by the dealership? Would there be a glove box label code that indicates the specific OnStar unit config?

Thanks

HI there,
Passenger side rear of the vehicle, in the storage compartment, under the carpet.
Pull it back and the VCIM is right there.
There should be a label on the unit, which you will have to remove.
Give us that 8 digit part number and we can confirm if you have it or not.

Obsolete OnStar

Below is a message that I posted to the board back in March. I have yet to see or read anything to contradict it.

ot the newer digital - version of OnStar. Reproduced below is the e-mail correspondence I've had with OnStar. The bottom line is that our 2005 Corvettes have an obsolete version of OnStar and the only remedy is to shell out even more money. We've been deceived in my opinion and OnStar and GM should be made aware that we are not happy about it. If you agree, take a few moments to let OnStar know of your displeasure (their email address is below).

My email:

I was interested in adding OnStar minutes to my Verizon calling plan and called OnStar to confirm that my car has the digital version of OnStar. Much to my surprise, and more to my disappointment, I was told that my 2005 Corvette has the analog version of OnStar. The Corvette is among the most expensive cars that GM sells as well as among the most technologically advanced. To say that I am disappointed that my new Corvette, for which I paid over fifty thousand dollars, has an OnStar system that is no more advanced than that offered five years ago and, worse, that the system will not even be functional before long, is an extreme understatement. In effect, me and every other buyer of a new Corvette with OnStar has been duped and cheated. Why is there no mention in the literature on the Corvette that it has a long-outdated obsolete OnStar system and that it will soon be unsupported and unusable? I can assure you that I wouldn't have purchased the OnStar option and I can also assure you that the service will not be renewed beyond that period that I already paid for when I purchased the car.

The OnStar response:

Dear Mr. Stanford,

Thank you for taking the time to e-mail OnStar.

Recently, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruled that wireless carriers will no longer be required to support the analog wireless network after February 16, 2008. After that, if the carriers for OnStar elect to provide only digital service, beginning February 16, 2008, OnStar service will only be available through dual-mode (analog/digital) hardware. As of June 2003, all OnStar systems utilize analog-only hardware. From the beginning, OnStar has relied on a nationwide analog wireless network to provide communication to and from OnStar-equipped vehicles. Today, the analog network continues to provide the most extensive coverage across the U.S. and Canada. However, the U.S. wireless carriers have begun to shift from analog to digital networks and so will OnStar.

The FCC ruling states that wireless carriers are required to support the analog wireless network only until February 16, 2008. After that, if the carriers for OnStar elect to provide only digital service, OnStar service will only be available through dual-mode (analog/digital) hardware. Still, five years is a long time, so it is difficult to know for certain what level of analog service carriers will offer, if any, after February 16, 2008. Rest assured that OnStar will continue to monitor analog coverage throughout the five-year transition period and provide updates as they become available.

All GM vehicles equipped with analog/digital-ready hardware will be eligible for an upgrade to digital equipment. However, the timing of upgrade availability will vary, depending on model year and specific vehicle type. Vehicles with analog-only hardware are ineligible for digital hardware upgrades.

Digital upgrade kits are now available for some GM vehicles. Upgrades for these vehicles will be provided to OnStar subscribers with the purchase of a non-refundable, 3-year OnStar subscription. The digital hardware upgrade program is currently limited to U.S. subscribers only. Canadian subscribers will be contacted prior to January 1, 2008. To check if digital upgrade kits are available for your vehicle, arrange for an upgrade, or obtain more information on digital hardware upgrades, please contact your local GM dealership.

To determine the hardware type of your vehicle, please press the White Dot button in the vehicle. If the system responds "READY", then your hardware is analog-only. If the system responds "ONSTAR READY", then your hardware is analog/digital-ready.

If you have any other concerns, please feel free to contact the OnStar Customer Care Department at 1-888-4ONSTAR (1-888-466-7827), prompt 4, between the hours of 6am and 1am EST.

Sincerely,

Krista

My response:

Dear Krista,

None of this was explained, mentioned, alluded to, or even hinted at when I purchased my car. You write that "five years is a long time" but, in fact, the OnStar system in my new Corvette will be obsolete in less than three years unless, of course, I pay for a NON-REFUNDABLE 3 year subscription. In other words, I'm stuck with an obsolete system unless I pay even more than the $55,000 I already paid for the Corvette that I bought with what I thought was an OnStar system that would last at least as long as the payments!

To not make it plain in selling the OnStar system that, in fact, it will be obsolete in three years (unless you pay more than you already have) is misleading and deceptive.

Are you saying you paid $55,000 for a phone? I paid 50k for a CAR. If the phone is that big a deal I don't get it. We've let technology change our lives and society forever(not a good thing IMHO). Don't get me wrong, I make my living servicng and maintaining a telephone system, but I don't live or die by that technology. If you count the ON Star in my car I lug around 4 different cell phones. And hate I telephones of any kind! Good luck resolving this issue but I wouldn't let it ruin your Corvette experience.

No, I paid $55,880 plus tax and title for the car. However, it included $695 plus tax for the OnStar system. I have no intentions of letting it ruin my Corvette experience, however I have every intention of getting my $695 worth. I don't believe in donating unearned profits--especially when I worked for my money.

To C4C5, the local dealership, which does have a Corvette specialty performance section, is now trying to research where to find that VCIM. Apparently this is all new to a number of folks. I wasn't sure exactly where to pull up the carpet and didn't want to disrupt the speaker housings. We'll see what we find.
Thanks
