Hello All,
First timer here. I purchased my first corvette last spring. 1989 L98 convertable. I absolutely love this car. It is so much fun to drive.
Now that I have driven it bone stock for a year, I would like to do some simple bolt on mods. I have just installed a K&N air filter and was wondering if anyone has had any luck with the open air filter lid? I also see there is a cold air induction kit that Mid America sells. I believe TPIS also has a version.
I was just wondering what some advantages and disavantages of each set up may be.
Thank you all in advance

Welcome to the CAC. I am currently running the K&N with open air lid on my car but would like to upgrade to the Ram Air setup. The open air lid seems to work fine. I'm not sure if the gains are nore noticeable if you go with a flipped over lid or not. I'm sure they are all within a few horsepower of each other. I like the look of the ram air kit and I think it may be the most beneficial.......it also is pretty pricey

The open lid is fine but the 3-5 hp gain will not be noticeable. You also need to think about opening the exhaust as well. Flo-thru mufflers at the very least. Maybe a new chip as well. I did these on my '89 and there is a noticeable improvent in torque and power. Good luck.

I have the cut lid that i cut with tin snips. I noticed some improvement in throttle response, and can now hear a sucking sound in front of the car.

Dont buy any of those cold air setups if youre looking for real power gains over the cut lid, because theyre not really worth the money for the gain.

The only Cold Air kit I would buy is the SLP part, its like $160. Its a real cold air kit, but it would only help you above say 80mph. I'm going to buy this one, simply because my stock lid housing is broken.

Thanks for all the input guys. I think what I am going to do is purchase one of the open lids, either from Ecklers or Mid America. That way I will still have the stock lid.

I also see that alot of you have removed the screens from the maf. Would that compliment the open lid?

If you still want to keep the stock lid, I have an idea for you. Check out some of the Vette junkyard dealers and ask them how much a lid costs. Buy that lid and cut off the "gills" yourself. I used a router or something like that. It took me about 15 minutes and the lid costs something like $15 at the Vette junkyard.

As for removing the screens, my experience was a funny idle so I switched back to my MAF that had the screens in it. Yep, I did the Vette' junkyard with that too.

As long as you have the stock TPI and exhaust you won’t see much improvement after the cut-out lid. The intake is too dirty and long to suck much more air through it.

You can clean up the plenum yourself for the price of a set of gaskets and a Dremel tool. A polished intake and less restrictive exhaust will give you a solid kick in the butt. After that the L98 wants heads, a cam and a better intake system.

Stay away from any of the ¨cheap¨ bolt ons. Espicaly the TB spacers.

Open Lid and other quick mods

Da Hawaiian Punch just helped me snip out my filter housing today, I added a K&N Filter and we removed the MAF Screen and did the throttle body bypass.

After driving the car I noticed the sucking sound and also...more importantly....the car had a smoother acceleration and what seemed to be a slightly quicker response when I stepped on it hard.

Easy mods that in my opinion are worth the trouble.....fun Sunday afternoon. :Twist
