Opti Replace--WOW!!

Don't mean to be a wiseguy but....the only difference between Dexcool and the yellow coolant is that DC does not breakdown as quickly as the yellow coolant (needs to be replaced every 24 mos or so). DC needs replacement around the 48-60 mos period. GM normally recommends 60 Mos.

In any case, I never had any issues with using DC. When I refill mine I use Prestone anyway and it is suppose to be a long life one although I replaced it every 2-3 years.

In this thread and other places on the internet I see reference to long life coolant and how often it should be changed.

The only thing that goes bad is the anti-rust the anti-freeze will protect from freezing forever.

I have never changed the coolant on any of my vehicles but every fall I add a bottle of ant-rust & water pump lubricate.
How well has it worked for me ???? I have 1971 Chrysler and the cooling system looks perfect also have a 1977 F250 I bought it new still have it radiator looks like new 1985 F250 diesel never changed cooling system looks like new.
Recently I bought a new car I will never change the coolant on it I have never changed the coolant on my Corvette.

If it makes you feel good fine but it is not necessary just add anti-rust and you will never have a problem.

thanks for the info.... learn something new everyday..... :thumb

One thing I did not mention that should be obvious but after adding a few bottles of the anti-rust it will weaken the freezing point so you will need to add a little anti-freeze every few years in order to keep it protected.

I shudder when I hear storys such as this.

1. If your car has the original water pump and more than 70 or 80k on it, I would have done a water pump too. Thats what kills the opti units, a leaking water pump. ( I know, car wash in your case)
2. For $500 you could have bought a billet MSD opti unit, latest and greatest with upgraded cap with vent to remove built up moisture. Plumbed to a vacuum line. Simple, easy to do mod. I also would certainly have done plug wires, they are a bear to do without removing the a/c compressor, and as long as I was in there..........
3. Check your overflow tank regularly, you'll need to add coolant/water until it no longer go's down. Check it when cool and keep filling it to the cold fill line. Check for loose hose clamps where you saw the steam emit from. Although there are bleed screws, I have still found that you'll add water a couple of times.
4. God, I'm in the wrong business. Although I make extemely good money fixing flying buses, I could get rich working on other peoples cars and not have to work nights to do it.
