Ok... the tach and batt wires on the distributor. I think they're keyed, but not sure if the new cap is. Is it brown left of white, or white left of brown?

I've got the car buttoned up except the valve covers, and it cranks, but won't light. There's fuel (checked by pressure gauge) but haven't checked spark yet. Just tried cranking it right before dinner. Looking at anything obvious first.

Can't be TOO much; didn't take a lot apart!

Had to run out to Garage and take a look, but it's brown left of white, that is brown to the front of car white to the back.

Thanks. Sadly, that's the order I have them in. Gotta think of what else...

Rich,

crack the butterfly's open alittle on the gas pedal. this will help it "get" started. give me a call on the cell when you got some time and i'll come over.

You said new cap ??? did you use your old coil? make sure the connections are in place . If they get out of place when putting the cover on the coil your wires won't make connection. It may sound silly , did you put the rotor back in ? :duh been there , done that.

Scav, thanks for replying. The coil/cap was taken off so I could remove the SuperRam to fix a leak; rotor wasn't removed. Coil wasn't taken off. So nothing should be out of place there...

Oh, Mic - you've got this big red "V" on your Bush/Cheney sticker. Are you trying to tell us they're from outer space and are here to steal our water?

Rich,

V for Victory :upthumbs

since your motor is still very brand new and not broken in yet, the bearings, pistons, and other internal moving parts cause more friction than the old motor. is it popping off at all? if so crack the butterfly's open some. if not get bonnie to crank it over and pull a plug and stick it on your tongue and let me know what happens :L

Yeah, Yeah,....... I'm sure that would work Rich

;LOL ;LOL ;LOL Good one Mic.

OUCH they teach that as a remedy for viper bites. :D

Dang, Mic! You're as bad as my co-worker who said something similar...

Don't you remember the 70's TV miniseries "V"? Later became a comic book as well.

I get no popping or anything. Just cranking. Haven't played with it yet tonight.

yeah i remember that tv series. was pretty cool :D

Alot of long tongue on that show :bu .

Make sure you hooked all 3 plugs in the dist cap.
Map sensor hooked up?
18436572 Drivers side front #1

MAF, not MAP, and definitely attached...

All three connectors on dist. cap are attached.

Wires weren't disturbed from when it ran last.

I seem to get no spark at all. I hooked a timing light to wire #1 and held the trigger while I cranked the engine. No flashes.

This has GOT to be something simple I'm overlooking!

Did you check votage to the dist. ? another been there done that . I once got the connector cocked when I hooked it up and bent the connection to the outside of the insulator. I even managed one time to bend the center rotor clip back. Is there any way the carbon pin in the cap could have broken ? Look for a pinched wire , it is easy to get a wire between the cap and the dist. ;shrug

All good things to check, and all things I haven't checked yet. Was at a meeting tonight and didn't have a chance to play with it.
Thanks.

I would say recheck every thing that you touched and the wires and conectors in the area you were working.

I changed my dist cap and rotor last night and even after I taged the wires I mixed them up.
Of course the shop kid was there and had to make a coment ,You can make a 1994 vet run low 11's but you can't get the wires right on a 1986 Vett.
:eyerole

You sure your getting fuel, Did you pull any fuses, check fuel presure.

Just throwing things out there.

I'm not a mechanic...but some things I've run into while doing similar work on a 92 blazer..... check ingnition module and it's connection, check ECM connection.

Also check the wiring harness for the module. I had one go bad and it caused all kinds of problems. Normally the ground wire in the harness will be bad or have a bad connection. Mine took out a second module before I figured it out.

Well, it starts and runs now. I pulled off the distributor cap and unplugged/replugged all the wires and it fired right up.

Reason I'm not ecstactic right now is because it still appears to have a vacuum leak. The engine still revs up and down, though not as much as it used to, and the vacuum rises and falls with the revs. Tomorrow I'll start spraying carb cleaner around again and see what happens, but I'm going to be extremely ticked if it's something under the plenum/manifold again.

Should I have used teflon sealant for the small bolts holding the plenum to the runners? They do open into the inside of the plenum.
