Does anyone know what the original supplied shock absorbers were on the 85? My car is original and stock for the most part and has the AC Delco Performers. It seems these are the original shocks but I'm not sure and they're still in good shape but I'm thinking of going to Bilsteins. I don't mind a stiff ride, in fact I would prefer it. Any feed back would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Carlo
My first choice would be to go with Bilstein's for replacement shocks. Get the Z51 shock for the best handling. They are stiff but worth it. You can get them from the catalogs for about $280 less freight/handling. My local AutoZone has them for $89 each which is pretty pricey to me. Contact the supporting vendors or search some of the on-line parts places to get the best deal.
Bilstein Z51 shock part #'s:
Front - B36-0228
Rear - B46-0238
If you don't want to go with that amount of money, consider the KYB Gas-A-Just shocks. I ran them on my '78 with the FE7 Gymkhana suspension. The FE7 springs were pretty stiff and the KYB's worked very well with them. You can get KYB's from Summit Racing for $28 each including freight.
I'm not sure if this will help you but the manager of the local Corvette shop told me that the original equipment shocks that came on all c4's from 84 -90 were AC Delco's. That being said, my car ('87 Z52) came with Bilstiens from factory...
If you go with the Bilstiens you'll love them. They will be a very noticeable improvement
Thanks guys. I'm running the Gas A Just on my 82 and love em Cruiser but the C4 is a whole different animal. All indicators point to the Bilsteins. I was just interested to know whether the Performer was the original shock when the car was manufactured.
Interesting that fast asleep got Bilsteins from the factory on his. Any 85 owners out there with original shocks (Z51 exc)
