1984 Dash Conversion to 1996

As I am not sure of this Modification, would it be possible to install a 1996 Corvette Dash in Place of the 1984 Dash???

I feel that the 1996 Dash looks so much better than the 1984's. Kind of gets away from the FLAT look...

All help is appreciated...

Just wait until Jeff sees this, he'll be able to help you. He's done it. ;)

This is what we did, but mine is analog again, not updated to a later model.

This is my dash currently (a little farther along than this ;)):

This was Jeff's dash in November of 2001:

He'll see this if we keep bumping it back to the top. :L

At least you have gotten things started and well on your way. I am just now beginning my project on this 1984. A lot to do...

I will be removing all the Computer Components and switching back to Carb, so will be cleaning out ALL the wiring as soon as I get to that point...

Looks good though...

Trade it in for 1996..

I have done the conversion on my 89 to the 1991 dash. The 1996 dash would work, but you will need a 1990-1991 harness. You will alaos need a CCM which you would have to find a dealer willing to program if you converted, I had a friend at a dealer do it for me. Also since you have a X-fire car, you will need to figure out how to intergrate the Stock ECM. If you had a TPI it would be much easier, I bought a 1991 Engine Harness as well at the complete daah and converted it.

If you use your stock ECM harness the MPG functions will no longer work (which may not be a concern) also you will get a constant SYS light flashing on the dash, this is caused since the CCM is the Master Computer and the Engine computer is the slave, since the ECM wil be for your 84, the CCM will not see the ECM since it is looking for a 1991 ECM

I don't want this to discourage you, but that is the problems you will hit.

Getting the dash to fit takes some creativity as well..

Check out my site.. http://www.vettextc.net/dash_conversion.htm
It is not very detailed, but gives you some ideas.

oh yeah..

here is a current picture

Thanks Jeff...

I am doing away with all the Electronics and changing over to Carburetor on the Engine. There will be NO ECM nor anything pertaining to it...

I will also be replacing the Complete Wiring Harness, so hopefully I will be able to go this route...

Any more info you may have will be helpful...

Well, assuming you are not using a CCM you will need to install analog gauges as the LCD speedo will not work without the CCM

Vettelt193,

Yeah I forgot to mention the door panels need to change and that there is not the pocket in the sill of the 84 for the speakers like the 90-newer

Thanks Jeff for all the info and any more that you may be able to supply...

I will be installing all AutoMeter Carbon Fiber Gauges throughout...

The Stereo System will be an AM/FM/CD/DVD/MP3 Unit...

As far as the Heating/Air Unit, I do not know whether it will work without the Computer. Maybe and maybe not...

You should be able to use the MANUAL unit from those years..

If you get the harness you need to be sure it is for a Manual AC car.

When you are ready I have a Manual AC control unit from a 95 (94-96 are the same)

Thanks Jeff...

I will be using a Harness from Painless Wiring (18-Circuit Universal)...

I will give ya a yell when I'm ready for the AC/Heater Unit...

Jeff

How much fabrication was involved in the Dash Conversion???

I looked at your site and the pics, and everything looks great...

Since I am doing a 1984 to 2000 Body Conversion (thanks to VanaCorvette), I figured to get rid of the FLAT Dash and get something with a little more style to it...

Thanks for all the help...

The most was getting it to fit, creating brackets. The other part was routing the window defrost ducts, other wise it is pretty sraight forward. I did also spend about 3 months planning before buying anything

How did you go about getting the dash itself???

Junk Yard, New Parts, etc???

Another question is for the door panels. Will the 1996 (or 1991) Door Panels fit the 1984 Doors without modification???

I do appreciate everything that you have supplied as for info...

It is taking a little time getting everything together, so really do not want to mess up...

Thanks again...

nice project

The '84 was only a manual Heat/a-c. The ECM has nothing to do with it.

Thanks WhalePirot for the info...

As I will be upgrading the dash from a 1984 to a 1990 or Newer, I will be using a different Heat/AC Unit...

Yes, all of the above, some are new most used, You will need to find a complete or near complete from a Junkyard.. try
www.vette2vette.com

Tell them Jeff with the 89 and 91 dash sent you

I know first hand that the 1990-1993 panels will fit, the brackets that the current door pulls screw to will need to be moved, but that is all.

Not sure on 1994-1996 they should fit, btu I never installed my 96 panels, I sold them since I still have a stereo. I did not want to cut them for speakers

No Sweat

Just spoke with Justin at vette2vette and he had stated that I may need to go with the 90-93 Dash with Door Panels as these will fit just fine...

He is working up a price for me and has also answered many questions regarding my 1984. Seems to be a great and knowledgeable person. Very professional...

Thanks Jeff for letting me know about vette2vette...

I may have further questions for you since you have done the Dash Conversion...
