Any one found a truly good product for removing oxidation. I have a very chalky 81 that is going to need some cleaning up till we can get some paint next winter.

I've had good success using DuPont white enamel polishing compound-- and do it mostly by hand so as not to cut too deeply into clearcoat finishes. For rougher spots, there's also a rubbing compound with greater grit. Then use a good carnuba wax and rub it in well-- I generally use a simple buffing wheel to really bring out the shine.

After experimenting with one car though, I chose to take it to a body shop/detailer to have a professional job done for consistency over the entire car - - it's a matter of your abilities and your wallet !

Good luck-

Chalk removal

I use a three step process that seems to work pretty well.
1) 3M medium cut rubbing compound. Will take off the chalk and rub out the paint to a dull shine. Start with the compund wet and allow it to dry on the rag as you buff. As it dries, it will shine the paint as you rub.You can use a buffing pad on an orbital polisher to make the job go faster.

2) 3M swirl mark remover. Use it the same as rubbbing coumpound. It will shine the surface to a higher brilliance and remove any marks left by the rubbing compound.

3) Wax. I use Collinite insulator wax and Formula 113, but any good wax will do. Maguires classic gold,Zymol,Etc.

thanks for the adivse . i have tried the maguries 3 step process in the past. Also the 3m componds. It seems to help quit a bit for about 1 week. No matter how much wax i put on her the chalk comes right back. Am i not cutting down into the paint enough ? Or do you just think my paint has no life left to offer.

It drives me crazy because the side of the car is fine, it just the hood and the pillars behind the t-tops.

Sounds like the sun and acid rain have eaten through your clearcoat on the top. Only permanent fix is a paint job.
I assume that you are getting some colored paint when you rub it out. Try the collinite, it should last a little longer and it's a clear wax so it won't chalk or discolor the paint.

from my understanding if your finish is milky is it pretty much
gone....... after you use paint cleaner is your finish smooth?
i had a few spots i had to clay with quick detailer to
remove some stubborn imbeded particles. now the finish is
smooth as a babies a$$.

it comes out smooth, and it still shines from the clearcoat, but the blue paint under neigth is definitly milky. Im not sure if the clearcoat is preventing the cleaner form helping the problem under it. Everone says i should see my paint color on the rag.. i never have.

this may be a stupid idea i am use to dealing with sheet metal this is my first vette
and i am still gettin acclimated to it, could it be possible that moisture has seeped
from the under side of the paint????? like i said i am new to fiberglass. i see you are
in ny i am from pa we have the smae crappy damp wet weather right now. is this a
problem for you when it is warm?????

Yeah it is still very apperent when its warm out. Its definitly the most visable in the direct sunlight.

well, geuss that isnt the cure.lol i am all out of ideas.i am sure someone in
here will be able to help ya out they have been gr8 to me in the past.

good luck

If your paint is enamel, you will not pick up color with a cleaner. Only lacquer will show color on your polishing rag as it is still "live" paint. The best polish I have found for my lacquered 1979 is Griots hand polish. Meguiar's no. 7 is also very good but very tempermental with weather. Sometimes very difficult to work and rub off. Like the other comments however, if the paint is truly shot, not much you can do other than repaint. Good luck with the effort.
