I just bought my first Corvette, a 1965 coupe. It is running but has no brakes at all. most of the brake parts have been stripped from the ride in a poor attempt to repair them prior to me buying the little lady. I am having a difficult time finding a P/B master cylinder. Any suggestions out there? There are other items I will need also, such as clock and power window switches and lots more.

Thanks,
Al

Are you looking for a correct master cylinder, or a good one for a driver? An original '65 Power brake Master cylinder start at about $300 for a core, and up to a grand for a restored one. A '67 and up style M/C can easily be made to work on your car for about $70.

Start collecting catologs to find other parts, or if you have the time get up to Carlilse next month on a pilgramige and bring cash or a card, and you will find everything you need, and if you are like me alot of stuff you don't, but can't say no too.

Tom,
Thanks for the info. I have an original M/C on there now. It has gone the distance but is in need of replacement. I am building a driver and I am more concerned about stopping on a dime and getting 9 cents change than making purists smile at a show. I have seen a couple of advertisements for P/B M/C that look like the typical GM steel M/C. I just wasn't sure if they would really work. Perhaps I should sell my original and use the money for other brake parts as well.

Thanks,
Al

Al,

Does you M/C have the 2 off white screw in caps? If so keep it, you can send it out to a rebiulder like Whitepost and have them redo it, the other thing to consider is what your steel lines look like on the inside, if they haven't hade any fluid in them they may need to be replaced, than you either have to cut the new ones or lift the body.

Keep the original one, and buy a replacement, and get some calipers and you are in business, at Carlilse alot of the vendors have brake job specials, calipers, rubber lines, and pads relatively cheap.

Tom,

Yes, I have the M/C with the two white screw on caps. Yes, I am going to replace all the brake lines and hoses, calipers and I am going to have the rotors trued. While I would like to keep the car original it is not as important as making it safe. Some of the things that keep this car from being original is the 1969 Camaro 327 that is in it as well as the black paint job. I will never have the $$ to make it 100% original show room condition. Besides, I want to drive and enjoy this piece of Americana and not put it under a glass bubble.

Thanks for the info and I will look into the rebuild option. Do you have any contact info on Whitepost?

Al,

Apple Hydralics rebuilt my 66 P/B M/C which is the same as 65 for $200 and you have an original and safe set-up.
Apple Hydralics is in Riverhead LI, they will use a brass sleeve which is better for street use.
