I changed out the original oil press gauge because it was reading very erratic all the time. The new one now stays pegged at the high range and doesn't even move after removing the wire from the oil sending unit. Anyone have an idea?

Try grounding the wire with the ignition switch on and see if the gauge move to the low range, if it does then you probably have the wrong sending unit, possibly a sending unit for an idiot light. If the gauge does not move after grounding it then a wiring problem or a bad gauge would need to be diagnosed. Good luck with it. :)
