Performance Upgrades

You're going to get a lot of different answers on the muffler question. You could almost ask "what tires" or "what wax" should I buy.

My Corvette came with Flowmaster mufflers, and it definitely sounds like I have a V8 under the hood. I know a lot of people think that Flowmasters are to generic sounding for their Corvette (they don't want to sound like a Mustang). It is nice, deep, and almost too quiet (hopefully the new headers will help that).

My Mustang came with Magnaflow mufflers. I think the Mustang is louder than my corvette, but not nearly as deep (that could be 302cid VS 350cid). Whoever installed them put the mufflers underneath the driver's seat, so there is more cabin noise than I like.

Although, my Mustang will set off car alarms when I start it. My corvette does not.

Corsa and Borla are popular, and I see a lot of people putting them on C5 and C6 Corvettes (i'm pretty sure they'll fit a C3). They advertise more power and a sound that is a little less common (I think a Corvette should sound better than a mustang or truck).

What you might want to do is go to a car show. Listen to different cars (preferably corvettes with the same size engine) and see what sound you like. Otherwise, you won't know what your car will sound like until it is too late.

In response to the mufflers in the link, you'll notice they are for 1984-1990. It looks like the mufflers are built into the exhaust tips. I'm sure you could make them fit, but you might have to do a lot to modify your current exhaust.

Here is my two cents worth on mufflers. I've seen people sink alot of money into mufflers, but for about $20 each, you can get a set of turbo performance mufflers from Summit or most any parts store (even name brands like Dynomax or Cherry Bomb). They look exactly like stock, sound good (in my opinion, deep rumble standing behind the car, quiet inside), and if you look around, I've actually seen them for that price with a lifetime guarantee. What's not to love? God bless, Sensei

Got the wrong link, apparently.

There is a version similar to that for the C3...and Eckler's claims they attach with little effort, right down to the built-in hanger.

Still, I'll check around.

I'm after that deep-throated rumble outside, quiet rumble in, and I don't want to set off car alarms either. It's almost good enough as it is!

Almost good enough is dangerous.... That's usually when I tinker with something I should leave alone....

Good Luck!

I want to thank you for being helpful in the purchase of my all original '81. OK, now do you have suggestions as to where to start to add horsepower? I have read exhaust system is a good place to start, but any other minor altercations without changing the motor and breaking the bank?

Steve

Cost is a huge consideration.

My $.02.... Acquire the parts over time. Buy a little here and there every now and then.

I acquired my TPI system over the course of two years- which is a year and a half before I installed the components on the car! Cost was easy- SLP runners here, base plate there, custom chip another month, etc.

The car- I bought it in December 2006...

If you can deal with delayed gratification- save up for what you want. Then buy it. Don't rush to junkgement from false promises in ads.

I have these on the end of true duals with no cats. I think it has a good corvette sound. I didn't like the sound of the big can style mufflers because they sounded just like that, big empty cans.
