Hello everybody,

I'm looking for a picture of the center gauge console and not the front but the rear.
More in detail, I'm looking for what color resistor is on what gauge.
My fuel gauge is way off (that's the one I know off) so maybe I switched resistors without even knowing it.

This is what I have at this moment.
Fuel gauge = pink resistor
Coolant temp = yellow
Volt meter = blue
Oil pressure = somewhat brown?
Oil temp = green.

At this moment I think the green resistor should go on the fuel gauge, pink should move to the oil pressure and the brown one goes to the oil temp. I still need to check the values of the different resistors. But it would be a big help if I knew where to put them. :)

Greetings Peter

And some extra info. I measured the values of the different resistors.

Yellow has 88.1 ohm.
Pink has 84.5 ohm.
Green has 90.4 ohm.
Orange/brown has 79.3 ohm.
Light blue has 125.8 ohm.

Greetings Peter

Nobody with some (old) picture taken from the backside of there center gauge console?

Greetings Peter

I never took any when I had the cluster out a few years ago...I will look in the aim b/4 I leave this am to see if it tells in there!

I have a second set of gagues in a box somewhere....but I sure do not remember any resistors on the back of it. I think you are going to make me go look.

Okay...went and found my extra gauges....this is the original set that came with my '81....I put in a new panel and used a set with the oil temp gauge instead of the clock..

But anyways, there are no resistors on the back side of the gauges...just terminals that the flex printed is held on with. So I guess if you can post a picture, then maybe I can go from there.

I even have a spare printed flex for the gauges.

Hello Lanny,

Your not the only one that didn't see them, I didn't till I found this page:

Console Gauges

Btw. I'm going to buy an extra oil pressure gauge and a digital temp gauge for the oil and water temps. Just to check if the original gauges are about accurate.

Greetings Peter

Okay....I know that when I looked at my gauges I began to wonder if those were resistors I was looking at and not just terminals.

So....do you need a picture of the back of the gauges with the flex removed?

If you have it that would be nice, even with the flex still in place is oke :)

Greetings Peter

Sorry I have not been able to check-in; I can take that picture today and post it for you. My spare set of gauges does not have the flex on it.

Lanny

Take your time I'm not in a hurry. And I think when you post the picture it can also help other members in the future :)

Peter,
I apoligze....I have not taken that picture yet. But will today and post it...if I can remember my password to photobucket!!!

Lanny

If you don't remember, just send the pictures to my email so I can post them for you... or for me :D

Greetings Peter

I remembered!!!!!!!!!!

Two photos for you:

Thank you for the pictures Lanny! :upthumbs

It only looks like the mystery is getting bigger instead of smaller. I was expecting to see some logic in the way the colored resistors are placed but there isn't any I can think off right now.

I have an extra digital temp gauge to check if my coolant and oil temps are correct. I also have a mech. oil pressure gauge, still need to figure out where to place this to check the oil pressure gauge. :)

Greetings Peter

The mechanical oil pressure gauge can only go where the oil pressure sensor is at...back of intake manifold. You should be able to put a "T" there or just remove the sensor and put the mechanical gauge in for a short time just to get a few readings.

AS far as the digital temp gauges...probably require a different sensor or sending unit. The coolant temp is in the passenge side head; the oil temp is just above the oil filter. The coolant temp is going to be messy to take out....lots of coolant will come out.

Thanks :)

I think next time I'll first ask and then order things.. :W

I have no idea what size tubing the gauge needs so unable to help you out on this one.
Let us know what you find out.

After some problems with the original plastic line to connect to the external oil pressure gauge I connected the gauge today to a normal copper line.
I took the following 3 measurements (all with the car standing still)
When cold the dash oil pressure gauge reads 80 psi, the external mechanical one 60 psi, with the engine hot and in neutral the dash gauge reads 50psi, external one 30psi and with the trans in drive (but standing still) the pressure drops to 40psi on the dash gauge and 20psi on the external one. (This is with a heavy duty oil pump).
So I think the wrong resistor is behind the oil pressure gauge. Next up are the oil temp gauge and the water temp gauge. :)

Greetings Peter

By "...original plastic line to connect...", this is the the line that came with the external gauge right?

If so, then this line should have just required a ferul and a compression nut type of fitting to attach to a T that screws into the block. If your copper line was a different internal diameter than this plastic line, the reading would be incorrect, although the readings you gave for the external gauge seem more correct than your dash gauge unless the heavy duty oil pump you have is a high volume/high pressure one. Any idea if the high pressure spring was installed into the pump?

I would think that the resistors for the original oil pressure gauges would not be have a wide range of values as they are all made the same.

Ahhhh....the search continues.......
