I'm looking to put hooker side pipes on my '81 in about a month or so and I am still debating what finish to go with. I like the shine of chrome, but the hooker ceramic coating or the jet hot coating has a performance appeal as well. I was wondering if people could post pics of the ceramic and jet hot finishes on side pipes? Any comments would be nice too.

How is the hooker ceramic coating compared to jet hot? Also, how much heat reduction is there? Is it really noticeable in the cabin?

My vette doesn't seen inclement weather and only gets about 2700 miles a year...

thanks,

i have had the sidepipes for awhile. I got the ceramic coated ones, and now i am going to have to have it powder coated, since the ceramic coating is peeling and cracking after about a year. admittidly, i drive in incliment weather sometimes, and mor that 2700 miles a year, but still... i guess i would go with the chrome coating for ease of cleaning, or just buck up and jet-hot it. after driving in the rain, there is some surface rust on the end of the headers...i have to polish it every time it rains now.

Thanks for the info Jens... So I guess it is now between the Jet-Hot or Chrome. Hopefully someone else can help me with some good pics of these to finishes!?

Thanks!

OH YEAH, forgot to mention that I like the supercharger... I wish I had the balls to put something that ridiculous under my hood!

i forget where i saw some real world pictures of the chrome finish... but it looked great. or, get them powder coated (about $250 for headers and pipes) and get whatever finish style and color you like! i think i might try black for the pipes, headers and scoop. never seen that before...

See Sig.

Chrome! This is their 2nd full season. My car saw 2k miles last year. If you like the shine of the chrome, but want the heat resistance of the jet hot.... get the chrome and some header wrap... just wrap the headers!

Just as a side note... the hooker muffler inserts do not sound great and are a huge HP theif. Go with open pipes if you can stand it, or spend $300 on the Spiral Turbo baffles.

I have the jet-hot sterling coat

Jet Hot looks more like a dull silver compared to the chrome, you can see it in my icon to the left. Chrome definitely looks better I would say, but the problem is the heat. Jet-hot definitely makes a difference in the engine bay, I would say about 50 degree cooler at least. I am not sure how this compares to wrapping them. Also when you get out of your car and back your calf against the side pipe (which you will do) the jet hot may save you a few layers of skin. It is warm enough to scare you, but not enough for an instant burn like chrome.

If you run them with open sidepipes.... they don't get hot enough to burn you... at least mine don't. Not sure how hot they run with the Spiral Turbos.

Well, I do plan on running some kind of insert. I think I'll be more comfortable driving it with them in. So the Jet-Hot makes a noticable difference in surface temperatures too? The leg-burn issue does worry me. How is the wear/tear on the Jet-Hot? Again, mine doesn't see rain/snow/salt.

One other thing, does it take considerably more effort to get out of the vette when trying not to avoid being burned (not that it matters too much)?

Thanks guys.

For me at first, yes.. but then it becomes 2nd nature. What is more important is your passenger.... be sure to warn them multiple times!

Shields

I have heat shieds on mine they get pretty warm but not burn you hot. They only cover the pipes by the doors so if you walk up to look at the engine while every thing is still hot you could hit the collector.mmmmmmmmm hot.Hooker pipes JLC baffles and custom sheilds all stainless.

Here's another pic of my car I took Today:

Those look pretty damn sharp Seventy-Four! I really do like the look of chrome, but I think the Jet-Hot has some practical advantages. Although, I'd still like to see a pic comparable to yours w/ the Jet Hot!

How do the pipes route underneath? Seems like it would be tight down around the steering valve and so forth?

So do you turn heads with the pipes? The stock exhaust currently on mine is way to mellow to do any of that. I'd be great if people atleast looked up. I had a buddy with side exhaust on a '94 Mustang Cobra. You could hear that thing coming MINUTES before you saw it (granted, it was a little over the top)!

p.s. I think i'm putting the insurance/plates back on Roxy for this weekend!!!

Pipes have some great sound. I am using the Hooker Glass Packs which I am told are terrible. I may eventually swap to the turbo baffles.

The pipes on a 350 are a pretty tight fit and I have heard that the pipes in a 454 are even worse. On mine the steering box is only about an 1/8 of an inch away from one of the pipes. And to install them I had to take them to a shop because you have to come from underneath the vehicle. I had the shop thread them through for me and just lightly bolt them in and then I towed the car home and completed the work there.

Click on the pic below and you will get a better view. These are Jet-Hot Sterling Coated Hooker's.

Yes, both SB and BB are tight around the sterring box. The downtubes all come back and route behind the front wheel flat up against the bottom side of the car. Then they bend into the collector you see on the outside, and into the side pipe. If you have a lift, you can install no prob... if not... have it done for you.

I will tell you that She turns lots of heads. My neighbor 6 houses away knows when I start the car. I pull up to stop lights and old farts roll up their windows because they can' handle the noise. The ground litterally shakes when I pull up to a light. Keep in mind I am running essentially straight pipes. I have no baffles in mine.

HAHA, awesome! I guess I need to find somewhere with a lift. About how much floor clearance would you say I needed?

I had mine up 20 something inches and it wasn't high enough, but close. I would say 2 1/2 feet should do it, but that is just a guess.

Sound

I am sure I'm not as loud a 74bigblock But I do make some great sound. My wife knows when I'm 1/2 from home. And it's great when you pull up next to those fart cars at red lights and can't wait to see you take off.

Hmm. 30" might be a little difficult... I wish I had a lift! I'll get on the horn and see if I can find someone to let me use theirs!
