Larry,

You are 100% correct.
In the spirit of sportsmanship (and envy because I don't have a straight axle)
I present you with the next best thing...
pictures of someone else's car!!

I found this at Volocars.com. It is for sale for $84,000.

It's beautiful and I thought I would share.

Nice picture....I was 6.5 years old (I assume that was summer) and my fiance pointed out to me that she had just been born!!!

That is a great picture....really GREAT!!!!

Picture of me with my first car A Stutz Bearcat. Car in back round was my mothers. She later gave it to me for HS graduation. Cool Mom

Picture of the aftermath of my first accident at only 4 years old. My father left me in the Charger in the backround while it was on high idle and he was scraping ice off the windows. I promptly dropped it into gear and hit about 10 cars in our parking lot. I would've traded me in right there and then

Pic of dad fixing my mess. Note my godfathers Avanti in the back.

Aforementioned cool mom with her 67 RS/SS Camaro convertible. It was the first Camaro convertible in NJ. I know it not a Vette but it has a solid axle and is part of the story.:D My parents were married in 67'. For their 35th wedding anniversary my father surprised my mother with a 35th anniversary Camaro convertible.:cool

Last shots of my straight axel.........

I have had this 1957 for about 5 years. It was bare when it arrived. 25 years in a barn had left it looking a little sad. I finished it last summer and enjoyed it. I caught Mid year fever caught once again and sold the car 1 month ago. The car leaves tomorrow for its new owner.......

Since I aqm out East, My father is getting to ready to be trucked to Seattle where it will be picked up as well as sent it to be detailed for the new owner as well.

First time the hardtop on.

I am having second thoughts about the whole thing. It is a sad day......:cry

what a beautiful car!

it's sad to see it go I'm sure but if it's going to another good home than say your goodbyes to her and let her go and wish the new owner the best of luck with her and great times with her just as you had and than go find yourself another car.

Any ideas on the year C2 you are interested in?

I am not sure if this counts or not, but either way this is the first time I have a chance to post this picture. I am not even sure of the year. The story is that my grandfather bought the car brand new because he always wanted the newest fastest car.

That is my father sitting in the car.

He later sold that car to buy a brand new 1965 Mustang.
Can anyone tell me about this picture?

well, it's a '56 or a '57.
other than that I can't tell you anything more, sorry.

nice looking car though. it's a shame your grandfather didn't keep it

The other part that surprises me is that my father never caught the Corvette Fever. He likes the looks of the cars, but has never really wanted one or owned one. Maybe it skipped a generation.

Keep the early Corvettes coming guys, they look great.

That's a very cool picture. I can't tell for If it's a '56 or '57 but I'm leaning towards '56 with the absense of the crossed flags in the cove. It's hard to tell the cove color but silver (w/ black, blue or white), beige (w/ red or green) or body color were the factory choices for 56. Many people put their own color in the cove area though and removed or added emblems (Fuel Injection emblems were on a lot of non fuelie cars). You see so many white cars with a red cove that you'd think it was offered. I suspect that the cove color on your grandfather's car is red from viewing many black and white photos over the years.

I can date the picture at fall 1958 or newer because the car has '59-'62 wheel covers on it. They have the little vent holes around the perimeter whereas the '56-'58 wheel covers were solid in that area. Your grandfather may have been a victem of theft as Corvette wheel covers were a very popular custom touch for other cars back in the '50s to early '60s. Also the newest car in the background is a '60 Ford station wagon that is setting second behind the Corvette. The car right behind it is a '57 Ford.

As for his decision to sell the Corvette to get a new '65 Mustang I would venture that he was caught up in the stampede of the time. Before the Mustang came out knowbody had ever seen or had the chance to buy that type of car. Looks, performance and price put it in reach of people that could only dream of buying a new sporty car. I was a car crazy teenager at the time and I would have loved to have had a 2+2 fastback with a 289 HiPo and 4 speed but I also had 2 friends with '57 Corvettes. One was a white/red 270 with both tops and the other was a black fuelie bored to 301, diamond tuft interior, hardtop only with '59 tail lights and side coves and flames in the coves.

Given the choice back then of either of those '57s or any new Mustang and I'd have been a Corvette owner. Wouldn't even have had to think About it.

Owen,
I know this isn't going to help your apprehension any but I don't know how you can do it. I love Midyears too and would kill for a triple black '65 Fuelie but I couldn't let go of that '57. I'm glad to see that you didn't see the need for a radio during your restoration. There are not too many Corvettes built without the radio option that still remain that way. One of the last things I'll do to may '59 is reinstall the radio blockoff plate. It will be saved for the finishing touch at it's coming out party, if I'm still young enough to party by then.

Tom

Wow - I love the old pics. I will add a few as well.

My 59 Corvette had one owner from May 1959 to March 2004. Here is a June 1962 pic of the original owner and her car:

Here is a pic of the car in 1975. Looks like the San Francisco skyline:

She drove the car a lot. She put 228,400 miles on the car in 45 years (very few miles the last 10 years however). Here is the original owner and her car in 2003:
