I'm currently doing a "frame on" restoration on my 79. I'm planning to paint the frame rails, trailing arms, bumper brackets and frame components with POR15 black. My question is: Should I avoid painting any fasteners (i.e. nuts, bolts) and getting the the POR15 into threaded bolt holes etc. Is this coating thick and hard enough to give me problems in reasembly or future diassembly?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,
I'm re=doing everything in the rear end area right now and just got my POR-15 yesterday.
I plan on painting the major parts themselves but for the fasteners, they will be sandblasted or new. Look at it this way, POR things that can't be replaced like the frame, don't POR things you can easily replace like nuts and bolts. I think it looks cleaner that way, less like you exploded a POR cluster bomb all over it.
Just my opinion, good luck....

I have a friend using POR 15 on his Mustang. We've done some experimenting with it and it's a truly impressive product. From what I've seen, don't paint over anything you ever want to get off.

If the paint sets up on the fastner then you might not get it off too easy. You need to be sure the metal is clean of oil, grease, etc.

After cleaning I use the POR Metal Ready for 20 minutes, rinse it off with water, dry it then paint it. If I'm painting a part that will be top coated I wait until it's tacky then top coat it and after it's dry clear coat it with Eastwoods semi-clear.The semi clear over the POR black dresses it down to a nice satin type finish.
