I'm in the market for a higher rise hood... only so I can fit a dual plane intake underneath her. The only manufacturer I know about is ACI. They don't have much in the way of pictures on their website (and frankly, i'm not so keen on any of their designs anyway)... so I'm wondering if there are more folks here with pictures or alternate hood sources.

Thanks!
Dave

In my sig and site below.

1970,

I have considered the L88 Style hood, but found that the 73 and up hood configuration makes the raised section shorter than the original L88. That, combined with no chrome bumpers protruding, makes this option look doofy to say the least (my opinion of course).

BTW, I did get my wheels from that guy over in Erie. He drop shipped them direct from ARE in OH, and mailed me an invoice. Not too shabby! Now I just gotta find some 315/35's to put on 'em.

Man your car looks awesome though! I love your paint job, and of course... the transplanted 454 :)

Dave, i am using the Eckler's hi-rise hood. it basically has the same profile as the stock 74 hood, just taller. appx 2 1/2 inches.

slightly off topic, anyone have a hood left over that would fit a 1980?

74BigBlock... I have personal experience with Vanacor... I would not use them if I were you. The L88 hood I got from them was really poor quality. The "center" of the hood was not centered. The left hood latch bolt holes do not line up. Also, the left side edge of the hood had a fairly major dip below the fender line. When you talk to them about the issues, they always say it's not an issue with their product. We had to do some major glass work to get it to match to the body.

As a side note. I had a dual plane on my new 427 block, but it wouldn't even make clearance even with the new L88 hood. I ended up having to go to a single plane. I have good clearance now.

Cheers

dnewton,

Thanks for the heads up on Vanacor.... Their web page sucks too. I want to at least be able to look at a picture of the product before I purchase. ACI has a few pix out there, and are also at most of the big Vette events here in Chicago (Vette Fest, Bloomington... etc).

This also sucks. I really want to get the dual plane under there. I have an Edelbrock Performer 2.0 sitting on my shelf in the garage gathering dust. I do have an extra '74 hood that came with the car when I bought it. Maybe I can have someone cut a big hole in it, and just get a scoop or something.... maybe do a custom cowl??

you can always make your own from a stock hood by cutting it and adding fiberglass to raise the height like member patsnitrovette did

Hmmmmmmmm..... :naughty:

Craig,

You always seem to have the right answer! I think this is going to be the direction I take, especially since I have that extra hood laying around. It's all crappy and pitted anyway from it's previous owner. Might as well give it a shot.

Thanks,
Dave

Added "small" L-88 for clearence for a Super Vicotor intake.

That guy is still in business. He now ships out of Ohio. I just called them yesterday.
