Has anyone here ever replaced a power antenna motor on a midyear? Is it worth doing? If not, can you do something to over ride it and work the antenna manually?

Dave S.

Done it, but it's been a while. I never had any success operating one manually, but once it's in a fixed position mostly extended, it'll work fine for radio listening.

As far as replacing the antenna and motor assembly, not much too it, but as best as I remember, you do have to remove the left hand muffler and possibly the left side rear exhaust pipe to get to it.

Hope this hellps, I've got one that works and one that hasn't for several years. I get along fine with both of them.

I have replaced the motor and drive, and rebuilt mine. I wrote an article for the NCRS driveline on rebuiding 66 power antennas - I can mail it to you if you can't find it in the NCRS Restorer archives.

I also have all the parts that comprise a motor - if you are sure the motor is the problem. When I spliced two antenna drives together, I ended up with a spare motor and housing.

Having said that, I will tell you that I bagged the restored assembly for some time in the future - when I can't walk or drive and I may want to make a garage furniture collectable out of my 66. I installed an Asian power antenna from JCWhitney to drive around with. The reception is better and it collapses completely into the body when you put it down. The stock antenna does not.

Dave, is it your recollection as well that you have to remove the muffler and tail pipe?

magicv8, I was also wondering if you have any information regarding a source of parts for the flexible drive cable used on mid-years. I have one power antenna now that the motor runs fine, but the drive cable is the problem.

Ideas?

Dave S- I don't havefactory mufflers - I use stainless Borla Turbos - and I can get mine out with the exhaust intact.

I'll dig out the old article. The drive cable is the parts problem. Iy's nothing more than a stranded steel cable with aa long spring wrapped around it. The cable is easy - bicycle or motorcycle brake cable, shifter or throttle cable. The long spring is the hard part.

Let us know if you can get a spring supplier to provide them. The rebuilders seem to have a source.

I have the article - but this forum hides your email addresses - which I need to send the attacments - figures (photos) for the articles. I emailed the two members who asked for the article requesting a target address

antenna

Corvete Central sells a replacement unit to replace the power assembly so you can push/pull it up & down as required.. it seems these things are prone to failure .. mine does not work either but along with a headlight motor that no longer wants to flip out the light pod will get some attention over the winter..
