Help! power driver's seat

My driver's power seat will not move in the backward position. I can move the seat forward, but when I try to move it back, nothing happens. If I play with the switch, sometimes it will move back. Thinking this was my problem, I bought a new switch and took the seat out and replaced the switch. Same problem, I think my next choice is a new motor or new base assembly. Given the cost, I'd like to be sure before i look for one on line.
Any body out there a seat expert????

Do you have the 1997 Factory Service Manual?

The car is a 1997.
The seat is a standard seat without memory.
I have a 1998 GM shop manual, all three books.

I looked through it and the diagnosis is about three pages long and very confusing.
The seat moves forward no problem. Moving backwards is very intermittent.
Thinking it was the switch, I dropped about $110.00 to find out it's not the switch.
I'd rather not spend the money unless I'm sure that I'm replacing the right part.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
