I have a tip for you when flushing your C4 power steering.
All this discussion of power steering flushing reminded me that mine is due or past due. When in town this morning I picked up some fluid and did the job after getting back home and while the car is on the lift and I'm doing a bunch of stuff to it anyway and while my assistant was here.
In the course of doing it, I found some tygon tubing that fit neatly into the hose that I disconnected from the TOP of the reservoir. I then plugged the nipple of the reservoir.
The messiest part of this job is if the hose lays in a drain pan and starts wiggling around once the pressure starts blowing fluid out of it. I have had the hose come out of the drain pan before and make a significant mess.
I looked in the trash and found a one gallon Hawaiian Punch container. It is PERFECT for the job because not only is it clear so you can see what's going on with the excess fluid, but it has a bail over the top. I took the tygon tubing and put it down into the jug and then used a tie wrap to secure the tubing to the handle so that it would not wiggle out of place.
After the wife had helped me to bleed the brakes I told her to start up the engine and start turning the wheel back and forth, lock to lock and be ready to shut it off when I gave her the sign.
I poured my two quarts through the system and she shut it off and it was the most uneventful flush I've done in a while. Uneventful mainly because I made no mess.
When finished, I simply put everything back together, filled and bled the steering. I then cut the tie wrap, recovered my tubing from the jug and put the cap on the jug and it's now all neatly ready for disposal at the recyclers.
I thought this might help since it sounds like there are a few of you ready to flush your system. It is a very worthwhile preventive maintenance step.
So, if you don't drink Hawaiian punch, it's time to find a neighbor that does and offer to throw out one of their bulky pieces of trash for them.
Good luck,
