I'm going to replace the control valve on my 82, it is leaking, anyone have any suggestions of things I should look out for before I start?

Make sure you follow the Shop Manual procedure for "balancing" the new/rebuilt control valve during installation, and DO NOT reach through the steering wheel to start the engine until the valve has been correctly balanced. Take a picture or make a sketch of the hard-line connections between the control valve and power cylinder - it's easy to connect them backwards.

I replaced a control valve on a mustang and almost broke my arm,Actually bruised my arm so bad it was in a sling for 2 weeks,I had reversed the lines and the wheel was going lock to lock untill I could shut the car off,(I did reach thru the wheel)NEVER AGAIN WILL I DO THAT

I am actually just getting ready to do that on my 1966 and have not read the manual yet so I will be following this post closeley.I have read the instruction notes with the valve but I also dont understand what balancing means

Now you tell me!!! I replaced the control valve on my 72 vert while I was doing the 383 retro, I was unpleasantly surprised when the steering wheel jerked so da*n hard it snatched it out of my hands and hurt like heck. I had the lines hooked up backwards even though I checked the book. Lesson learned!! As usual, The Hard Way.... Fred.

Here is a past thread about Power Steering Control Adjustments

And here is an article from the L81 VetteRegistry (see Item V Power Steering)with photo's and everything ;) hit the "continue" and read and see it being explained ;)

The hardest thing I encountered was getting the joint loose from the frame.. pickle fork... NOT, joint puller... NOT .... propane torch and a little ;) tap and out it came :D

Good Luck, take your time ;)

IH2LOSE, I'm not sure exactly, i think John is refering to PS fluid and the control valve. I made the change and moved the wheel back and forth after it knocked the crap out of me... I was still scared for awhile...i couldn't believe how hard and fast the steering wheel jerked back and forth. I wont do that again. Fred

Balancing a control valve means to follow the GM published procedure so that both sides of the hydraulic mechanism are getting equal pressure. There is a 7/16" nut under a stamped steel cap on the end of the control valve. It is adjusted left or right, again following the procedure, so that the pressure is equalized.

Use only the GM procedure and you will have a nice centered wheel without any control valve induced pull to either side.
