I'm thinking that the I have a PS hose leaking......Any other thoughts? Just started very randomly. everything fine. I move the car from one side of the garage to the other and when I move it back there is a puddle on the floor.

Hasn't shown any leakage since.

My pump started leaking also and according to the service manual, you should also replace the high pressure hose after 5 years. I got my AC Delco high pressure hose from Rock Auto for $14 (around $70 at the dealership), and the pump itself from A1 Cardone for $43. If it is leaking, it will be pretty obvious from all the fluid below it on the steering rack and the pump itself will be covered with dirty fluid.

Thanks AJ for the reply. I used to think that I had a small oil leak from the engine, but now I'm thinking that it's been a small PS leak. I'll check out the pump.

What about the low pressure side? Should I go ahead and change out that hose too?

I don't think that the low side is as susceptible to leaking as the high pressure, simply do to the amount of stress on the hose. Mine was bone dry. The service manual shows that you can change the high and low side without taking anything else loose, however, the high side is much easier to do when the pump is exposed or off the car. What I did is thoroughly clean the entire area so that any new leaks would be easily noticeable. You can see how much cleaner everything is as I'm reassembling the engine. I probably spent more time cleaning the engine than I'm doing actually putting it back together. I'm sick with this cleaning thing. :W

thanks again AJ, I know that you are probably sick of cleaning, but I know how anal you are. :D I think maybe I'll order a new hose and pump and change them out. I'll do some cleaning too while things are apart.

I don't know if you already have a power steering pulley puller but the one I had (that worked fine on my other cars), worked like crap on the Vette. It was the kit by US General. I ended getting a $30 kit from O'Reilly's that worked like a charm. I want to save you that headache in advance. :mad

My local O'Reilly shows that kit for $60........:ugh

You must live in the rich part of town. Wait a minute, don't you drive a Corvette? Yea, you're rich! :D :L

You can rent that tool from them too, you don't have to buy it. I just choose to buy every tool I have. I'm addicted to tools, even though I hate working on cars. Go figure. :eyerole

AJ, I'm like you....I am a tool junkie. I did find it on Amazon for $35, and I have an Amazon card which I earn points for using....I had enough to buy the puller, so it really cost me nothing.:thumb

Kewl! :thumb

Speaking of tools, I went and did something crazy. I bought a 19mm ratchet wrench. I have all the sizes up to 18mm but there was a slot in my drawer marked for a 19mm. I haven't had a need for it yet but that damn empty spot just aggravated me to death. Now I can sleep. :L

My PS leak was the left side of the rack. Changed it a couple of weeks ago and had it aligned. I wish I'd seen the part about changing the hose then. Mine probably is ok with less than 20k on it.

AJ, did you just do head gaskets? Is it now running?

You had to replace the entire rack? That looks like a fun job....NOT. :ugh

Yea, I changed the head gaskets. Talk about a PITA, those head bolts are a ball of fun. :ugh

I have been fooling with putting the car back together for months but since it was cold, I was in no hurry. Plus, I hate working on cars. Now that it has warmed up, I'm a little more inclined to get it done. I just have to finish putting the top of the motor back on.

I just got back home to se this. Actually it wasn't too bad.:thumb

With my impending surgery, I chose to take my Corvette to my mechanic yesterday. After looking at it he seems to think that rack is leaking, not the hose or the pump. I left it with them to work it in ASAP. I won't be able to drive for 3 or 4 weeks anyway.

If he changes the rack I'll be interested in knowing where he gets it from. I couldn't get it from any local parts houses or the dealer including GM Parts House. I got mine from Corvette Central. Zip might also have it.

I've found a couple places that have them......Zip is one. I'm looking at having Turn-One rebuild it, too.

I looked at Turn-One but I was able to drive to CC and back the same day so I didn't have to deal with shipping.

Did you by chance turn the steering without the engine running Tom?
If so,It probly just belched some up out from under the cap on the reservoir!
Purdy common if it's very full!:thumb

:D

Jesse, no I don't think so. I've had a very small leak for quite some time. I always thought it was engine oil, even though I never had to add any between changes. The other day, after moving the car around a bit. I find a big puddle, after about an hour and a half of sitting in one spot. Then putting it back on the lift I checked it a few days later and there's another big puddle in the drip pan and my reservoir is way low. I wish you were closer I'd have brought it to you to fix it.
