Putting my 81 engine back together, finishing it up and put the PS pump on..no problems until I put the belt on. And now the PS pump pulley is at a small angle to the crank pulleys, pointing a bit towards the block on the crank pulley side. Now I can change the distance the PS pulley is on the PS pump shaft, but I have yet to figure out what is bent, or whatever it is causing this. I know if I leave it the PS belt is going to last about an hour before it gets chewed up from the angle.

Any hints, suggestions,???? I am stumped.......

It is the same PS pump that I took off the engine, same brackets...everything the same. What do I need to do??

Thanks,

Lanny- I noticed the same thing when I was doing a rad replacement, timing chain, water pump, etc job several years ago. Put it back on and forget about it. I thought I had done something wrong also. My car has been fine for 5 years now. See picture...

Dave,

SUPER.....Thanks.....this is the best possible news I could have. I shifted the PS pump the most I could in its bracket and got it alignmed the best it could, so it about the same as yours.

I was going to say "That angle doesn't look that bad. I've seen much worse last for quite awhile."

As far as correcting this. I've found that tightening the pivot point first to the point that the pump can't be moved by hand. Then tension the belt using a prybar, on the area of the pump made for prybar appication, and tighten the slide bolts. Then tighten the pivot bolt completely.

Dave, was this the original pump? It looks like it should be on the passenger side. I only ask because I thought that the flat square area, just behind the pulley, is what you would pry against to tension the belt? It's been awhile since I've looked at mine and I'm at work right now so I can't check it out. Or maybe I'm just talking out my a$$ and don't have a clue. Just trying to help.

Yes. the car was in original condition when I purchased it.

My 69 BB is the same. That's the wonderful thing about these low tech v-belts. They really do work even when everything is not perfect.
