Corvette to Get Sequential 6-Speed Automatic

By Peter Robinson

WardsAuto.com, Aug 26 2004

New “Tiptronic”-type automatic should be available on the ’06 Corvette.

Help is on the way for the new Corvette – specifically its carryover 4-speed automatic transmission.

Better automatic on way for new ’Vette.
The car’s current automatic, which lacks “Tiptronic”-like manual-shift capability, is one of the few real disappointments in the otherwise impressive new Corvette. (See related story: C6 Corvette Powers Up)

But not for long. General Motors Corp. Vice Chairman and chief product guru Bob Lutz admits a sequential 6-speeder is on the way, though he declines to specify timing.

“We don’t talk about future product,” says Lutz, who mostly talks only about future product.

GM’s all-new 6-speed automatic will be a derivative of the Hydramatic 5L50-E sequential-shift 5-speed that is standard in the Cadillac XLR roadster. It will be built in four sizes accommodating up to 520 lb.-ft. (705 Nm) of torque and 450 hp. It brings a 7% performance improvement over the new car’s current 4L60/65 automatic, while hiking fuel economy 4%.

The new 6-speed automatic is expected in late 2005, for the ’06 model year. That is about when the Corvette joins the supercar ranks with the launch of a 500-hp, 7L Z06 version of the new model, which is scheduled to debut at the 2005 Detroit auto show. A new LS7 V-8 replaces the old 5.7L 405-hp LS6 as the highest-performance Corvette engine. Top speed jumps from the standard ’Vette’s 186 mph (299 km/h) to more than 200 mph (322 km/h).

“A German competitor (BMW AG) has just launched a complicated V-10,” Lutz says, “Our overhead-valve V-8 has the same power and performance, and only revs to 6,500 rpm.”

GM plans to start building the LS7 in its new Performance Build Center in Wixom, MI, beginning spring 2005. The $10 million facility has the capacity to make 15,000 high-performance engines per year.

That's a great line. :L

My new C6 has a 6 speed automatic

But it is an Allison. One especially nice feature is the electronic exhaust brake that operates from a rocker switch. When On is selected, the Allison transmission automatically selects the next lower gear about a seconds after you lift your foot from the gas pedal. Great for heavy traffic and going down steep hills. Acceleration is very smooth. It is superb handling all the torque from the C6 Cummings pushing the bus while pulling a Corvette and trailer.

I hope diesel drops in price, but don’t think it will have a material effect on our Bus Schedule. There are so many Corvette meets, and so few decent motels. Life is a beech, but somebody has to do it. Thank you to all who have provided the means to continue proselytize the unbelievers: the Corvette heathens. Free Corvette Bibles to all Believers. :D

HI there,
X16r will most likely be the designation of the transmission.
This unit is being built at the Willow Run assembly plant.
The variation of the 5L50-E is just not true.
This is a clean sheet design and not in anyway a relative of this lower capacity transmission.

So this new 6 speed auto will have faster acceleration as well?

I'm excited to see the new Z06! :D

Whew! TY for the info. I hope they can get it right, out of the chute.

Any info on how they will get the rear end to handle the extra power? Seems there is a stretch at current power levels to help it survive with the Z-51 R.E. cooler.

Izzat U Paul? After Deb and I got a new RV, the old Corvettes problems got put on the back burner and some even appear to have regenerated and repaired themselves. We have been touring like a Rock Band: Kountry Stars :D Thank you again for assenting to make a house call if necessary.

The entire driveline is substantially beefed up to handle the increase in torque and horsepower.
Is this only on the Z06 or will the beefier drivetrain be used in all the Vettes?

Seems manufacturing efficiencies would dictate the latter, but cost the former, as long as the beef's cost can be passed along. That would add to fears about a rather huge cost increase on the Z.

Regards :w
