Rheonetic(TM) MR Technology From Lord Corporation in Cadillac Suspension Takes Prestigious Award From Popular Science Magazine Decade of R&D Produces the Only MR Fluid Suitable for Commercial Application
CARY, N.C., Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Cadillac's Magnetic Selective Ride Control system enabled by Lord Corporation's patented Rheonetic(TM) magnetorheological (MR) fluid has received Popular Science magazine's Best of What's New in automotive technology award.
Lord Corporation is the world leader in commercially proven Rheonetic MR fluids and devices and is the only company supplying MR fluid that meets the rigorous performance standards for automotive suspension systems.
"More than a decade of persistence in our research and development, when so many others abandoned this technology, is paying off," said Lynn Yanyo, manager of sales and marketing for the Materials Division of Lord Corporation. "The bulk of scientific effort we've dedicated to this technology has focused on commercial practicality."
In the 2002 Cadillac Seville STS, Lord Corporation's magnetically responsive fluid provides the dynamic core of the MagneRide(TM) shock absorber supplied by Delphi, representing the automobile industry's most advanced variable damping technology.
Automotive Engineering International earlier this year presented Lord Corporation and Delphi its Tech 2000 award for MagneRide.
The Rheonetic technology-enabled suspension system is available on the 50th anniversary edition Chevrolet Corvette and is slated to be available on the 2004 SRX luxury sport utility and the 2004 XLR luxury roadster from Cadillac.[/]
The system consists of MR fluid-based monotube shock absorbers, a sensor set and on-board controller. The onboard controller continually adjusts the damping forces up to once every millisecond. When exposed to a magnetic field, MR materials change consistency from a fluid state to a near-solid state.
In addition to primary automobile suspension systems, Lord Corporation's Rheonetic technology has been successfully commercialized to control shock, vibration and motion in seat suspension systems in Class 8 trucks and in school buses, medical prosthetic devices, buildings and bridges.
In another commercial vehicle application, Lord Corporation supplies fully integrated, MR-enabled devices that faithfully simulate the tactile "feel" operators must rely on in vehicles and equipment designed with control-by-wire systems. This Tactile Feedback Device (TFDTM technology) has been in commercial use in forklifts since 2001 and is currently in development for off-highway and automotive applications.
Lord Corporation is the world's largest supplier and commercial development leader in MR fluids, devices and systems.
