Dealers are in business to make a profit. Expect to pay more than you would for the same car from a private seller. In return, you should get some peace of mind from doing business with someone who has a reputation to protect. Whether you buy from a dealer or private party, do your research beforehand. Arm yourself with as much market knowledge as you can and then negotiate your best deal. Walk away without looking back and learn from the experience.

this is VERY true!
you can't fault a dealer for trying to make a few dollars and staying in business but just be aware of that before hand but as mentioned in return you should get some peace of mind that a good dealer will work with you if you have a problem to protect hid reputation.
As an example: when I was searching for my car last winter and spring I was willing to look ar cars from anyone, whether it was a private individual or a dealer, so long as i could find the right car for me. I ended up finding the car I purchased at a dealer. If it was at a private individual instead that would have been fine also and perhaps i might have saved a few bucks buying it but it turns out it was at a dealer, it was the car i wanted and i think the price for what the car was was very fair, especially compared to others I had already looked at.
As it turns out i ended up getting VERY lucky indeed that I happened to buy from a dealer because afterwards I found what could have been a MAJOR problem with the car. If i purchased from a private person they would have said "sorry, tough luck - it's your car and your problem now". Instead, I called the dealer I purchased the car from, explained the problem and they were very concerned about making me happy and insisted I bring the car back for them to look at. After analysing the problem it was determined there were two methods available to fix the problem. One was a "quick fix" that really would have been relatively easy and fast for them and may have done the job adaquetly, or a MUCH more labor intensive fix involving pulling the motor from the car and doing it 100% right and making sure the problem was fixed so it would last as long as that car existed. I'm sure most dealers would have opted for ther fast, easy fix to keep their costs down but this dealer who I now greatly respect (NOT ProTeam), went the extra length and did the more labor intensive repair. Thier theory is that although they sold me a 40yo used car with no warranty they stand behind everything they sell and if it's not right they want to make it right and make their customer happy. If they went with the cheapo repair and it didn't hold they felt they would have felt the responsibility to redo it again a few more years down the road and it wasn't worth it - better to do it right the first time!
This dealer even sold me the car under the condition that I could drive it with unlimited milage and I had 2 weeks to return it for any reason if I felt it just wasn't the right car for me.
Sure, I paid a few dollars more from the dealer because he was a dealer but the 2 weeks "trial period" gave me the peace of mind mentioned in the previous post, and how the dealer treated the problem I ended up having gave me an even better peace of mind afterwards.
Don't misundestand me, I'm not trying to "push" you toward buying from a dealer over a private person, but IF you found the car you really want at a dealer and it's maybe a few dollars more than you expected, try nogotiating and also see how that dealer will treat you as a customer after the sale (just as you are on here asking about ProTeam now). Dealers aren't bad per se, but there are some bad ones out there to aviod and there are some very good ones that are really trying to work hard and sell people a good car at a fair price and try to treat their customers well - the trick it finding the right dealer. i'm very lucky I found one myself. I look at it this way; some dealers are "typical used car dealers" - these are the ones to avoid. Other dealers are really more true Vette enthusiasts and are very concerned about the quality of the cars they handle and sell and the happiness of their fellow Vette enthusiats customer but happen to be trying to make a living by doing it
just my longwinded $.02

Just my 0.02 cents also...

Hi Cristina, Take note of what others and BarryK say! I would only add that our passion for our hobby must be kept in a box while we are looking for the 'one car' we want. Everyone has a different experience with the same dealer. I tried ProTeam and came away with a slightly negative impression. Upon reflection the reason might have been the lack of "room" in the car. Or I caught a salesman on a bad day. I am still looking and if they had a car I wanted I would call again. I would be wary, but open minded. The same thing happened with another dealer, he had no answers to simple NCRS questions. I recently tried on E-bay and had very good talks, one a dealer and the other an individual. I was SKEPTICAL of E-bay. Now I learned you deal one on one, no broad brushes. Do not rush yourself, but be ready to pounce if the car meets your specs. I know that sounds like hurry up and wait, but you know the drill. CAC and NCRS have all the necessary info on the model yr. you want so arm yourself with it so you know what you are looking at. Hey BarryK who was the dealer that meet your satisfaction? Tom.

I would have quoted BarryK in my reply, but his small book woulda taken up a half a page. LOL...Barry.
However, what he said is true. As bad an experience as I had with Pro-team, that's how good an experience I had with Cookie's Corvettes in PA when I bought my 40th Anniversary ZR1 from Rob. He was as good as it gets in dealers. And, even though I had my fingers burned before and had my reservations about a "small" dealer, Cookie's was fantastic to work with. He even helped me out by taking me to a temp tag place across town and worked with me to title my car back here in Maryland 4 months AFTER the sale.
It's all about people, hon. Read them, get to know them as best you can and the good ones, like cream, will rise to the top.

Tom
I didn't list the dealer I purchased from because the intention of my post wasn't to "promote" them in particular, but to help show an example that you CAN get a good dealer although I know many people will refuse to purchase form a dealer just on principle alone.
But since you asked............ LOL

My dealer was http://www.collectorcarmuseum.com/
He is a small dealer in MD and doesn't usually have a LOT of cars in inventory at any given time but most of the cars are very nice. I was there once and a customer drove up from VA to buy a midyear ('65 i think) and while the customer was there he decided he loved a '62 that they had so he bought that ALSO.
I first saw my car when they advertised it on Collectorcartrader.com and since they were only 2 hours from me and also within my sales territory at the time I was able to stop in one day while working in the area. He spent over an hour going over the car with me. I than explained that I really wanted to come back with my friend who was my "Vette expert" and my wife so they could see the car. The only day I could get both of them there was a Sun but this place is closed but Keith said it wasn't a problem and he would be glad to come in on Sun to show us the car. Come to following Sun we showed up and he already had the car up on the lift for us, and we spent 5 hours going over every inch of the car top and bottom and taking it for test drives. I called him the next morning and told him I would take the car! Keith (the owner/salesman) was very honest about the car and not only pointed out the good points but also pointed out any negatives the car had that we missed on our own - he wanted us to be happy and know 100% what we were buying. I would recommend this dealer highly and would go back and buy from him myself in an instant.
He is also very closely associated with another shop:
http://www.tonyscorvetteshop.com/index.htm
who is one of the very top corvette restorers in the country. They actually share offices, parts room, and some of the workshops although they are seperate businesses.
When my car got backed into and needed some body repairs, it went directly to Tony's for the work!

yeah, yeah, yeah.....I know i'm a bit longwinded at times. Hey, to make matters worst I've got to type all that with only 2 fingers!
LOL
i know sometimes i overbeat a point to death, sorry!

Hi Barry, Thankyou for the heads-up on the dealer. I will go look them up on the web. I hear ya when it it comes to this typing thing! VRsoftware might be an idea. I must say that dealers like the one you bought from are a credit to the industry and they restore my faith in humanity. Thank you. Tom

echo Barry's comments - they restored my 1963 Z06 this winter - check out my webpage for their work - www.pbase.com/c5vetter

Sorry about the delay in response, worm virus. Looking for a convert with a 4-spd 350.

I did get down to Pro-Team and they were nice. It was way cool to see all of those mid-years together. They have four huge buildings FULL of mid-years (and some from the 50's, too.)

Not sure which path to take, just taking it easy now!!!

Thanx for all of the advice. Pro-Team will always be there and I would rather find a personal seller. It just seems right. Keep me in mind if you see a '67 in your travels!!!!
email me if you want to consider a67 327/300 loaded with documetation
