My car will be NCRS judged on May 1 & on May 2 I plan on beginning my engine removal. :D Right now, I'd like to gather all the parts & info I need to begin without running to the parts store.
It leaks oil from all over the place & I'd like to replace all the gaskets...plus repaint the block & do a bunch of other stuff....
Here are the questions:
What are the best sealing/fitting head gaskets, oil pan, rear main seal, exhaust & timing chain gaskets? I already have the valve cover & intake manifold gaskets. Any other gaskets I'd need?
I need some paint suggestions, I want to stay with GM orange.
The other stuff, besides cleaing up the engine bay...what is some other stuff I could do with the engine out, keeping in mind I'd like to get the car back on the road in a resonable amount of time (1 month max)...and also keeping my car as close to stock as possible.
Thanks,
Tony

You're probably best off leaving the engine the way it is until after the judging meet. NCRS does not do 'show and shine events' looking for microns of dust and the glossiest valve covers. A good cleaning (in place) would probably do the trick.

Spend the time instead making sure that everything is as 'factory correct' as possible. Do you have a judging guide to help determine what is right and wrong with your car?

If you do start changing gaskets. be aware that most replacements will be detectable during judging.

Mikey, the engine is getting pulled the day after (or at least the week after) the judging event. I already replaced the intake & valve cover gaskets with NCRS correct gaskets. I will be paying very close attention to what the judges deem as correct or incorrect around the engine bay. Those items that get deductions are out the window for sure.

"VHT" Chevy Orange and "Quanta" Chevy Orange both are excellent replications of the color of the original engine paint; I prefer the Quanta paint, as it's not as glossy as the VHT.

TonyK - It sounds like you are very concerned with originality so I will assume you are going for being as close to stock as you can get. However, what a great time to paint all your front suspension members and engine bay.

In addition, I have been staring at my front brake lines and proportioning valve and thinking "man, if the engine wasn't there I would...". Take a close look at your radiator, radiator supprt, etc. If yours is like mine it needs the work and that would be less than a days job to clean that all up, diassemble and get to the painters. On another project with the engine out, I made it a point to clean-up all my wiring and rewrapped wires with factory coveirngs.

Sounds like you got a great ride there! Tell us how you make out :upthumbs
