Pulley set up

I just want to know if a long water pump pulley setup will work on my 78. The motor is currently out of the car, but i do recall that the crank pulley was close to the front frame cross member . will a long water pump kit with all the correct pulleys cause the crank pulley to hit this cross member?

Is there some other reason you want to use a long water pump setup? The "long" water pump was never used on Corvettes.

It's not so much pulley alignment, but the fact that your fan will be in the radiator and/or shroud. At least that the issue I had when I put in my ZZ4 and it came with a long neck water pump. Maybe it's different with the '78, but I don't think so.

Long water pumps will work BUT

When I put my 383 in I wanted to get away from all the belts. I wanted a serpinetine belt system. I used all the belt drive system from a 4.3 S10 series pickup or blazer. I used the pump, compressor and alternator and aluminum brackets. Now remember that the pump must be a "reverse rotation". And forget about the fan shroud it wont fit. I used a flexolite dual electric fan. The next issue is the alternator sits higher so I doubt the stock hood will clear. My L88 hood had no issues with clearance. It is a clean system and the parts from a bone yard are cheap. And just one wrench is needed to change a belt.

I was curious about that, I to am going with the L88 hood and an electric fan. The only question I have, is will the compressor work with a vintage air system? I am planning to run this system and am not sure which compressors are compatable

I had to use a later evaporator 78 up that used the orfice tube metering.and the dryer reciever. Then I had a local parts store tha specilized in making ac lines. Make sure you "properly flush" the evap and condenser. I used a compressor from an S10 series truck. And converted the system to 134a The rest was history.
