Pushrod Question

When I removed the intake on my 86' I noticed they're were two pushrods that I could not twist at all and one that is really loose meaning a loose rattle can be heard.

Question is: Should I be able to move any of them or will there be some that are under preasure and some that are looser (doubt it).


I guess I should redo the valve lash while I'm at it eh, when I think about it I always heard a tap noise on the side that has the loose PR.

Most of them I am able to twist but no free movement.

At top dead center for each valve, there will be very little play, if any. When you adjust the lash, you tighten until you feel resistance to turning, and then go 1/2-3/4 turn more. This tends to make for little play. When they're not at TDC, the pushrods can move a slight amount - but really loose is bad...

I think you have hydraulic lifters. Solids are adjustable. Hydraulic lifters are adjustable only if you have backed off adjustment nut out of initial set. If you are experiencing lifter knock you probably have a sticky lifter (s). A can of Marvel Mystery Oil might do the trick. It has worked many times for me on different cars. Follow instructions on can.

If you try to tighten a hydraulic lifter which is IN ADJUSTMENT you may just drive the pushrod right through the rocker arm. Happened to me once in an earlier life.

Ok, I finally got a valve cover off and things look pretty good, but I can wiggle almost all of the rockers, and yet the pushrods on most seem to be solid or have no play.

Is it normal to be able to wiggle the rockers?? Or should they be solid, no play in them?

On my stock motor, I was able to wiggle the rocker arms slightly. They're really only under full tension when opening the valves.

If you have the valve covers off,you should be able to wiggle the rockers VERY little!! there should be NO freeplay in the valve train!!! If your not sure how to do the ajustment,GET SOME HELP!!!!! the ajustment is VERY IMPORTANT!!! Good Luck!!!!
