sorry man but that is just lame. there is nothing wrong with a L98 motor. i love pulling LS1 vettes and FBodies and them looking at me like i wasn't suppose to do that :D

the only LT vette i would buy would be either a ZR1 (which is most likely my next vette) or a LT4. i'd really like to find a 89 Callaway though. last year of the digital dash and a 6 speed to boot :Steer

Mic,

Forgive him for not knowing. :D

Seem that usualy the cheapest car to own is the one that is paid for. Not always, but you can surely decide.

Perhaps you han keep your smile quotient up AND send the kids to school!

hehe it's cool Edmond! just some people need to respect the ole L98 vettes. it's actually funny before i took my mufflers off and did some other exhaust work everyone and their mother picked on my old vette. i had a mini vans and stationwagons with mom dad and the kids trying to race me! now it's funny i punk out alot of cars that are way faster than me and suprise the ones that give it a try like that C5 a few weeks ago from 60-130 i pulled him by 1/2 car easy! i had a 200+ lbs passanger with the vid camera but the battery died taping earlier Lunch in the evening :D everyone says the L98 runs out of breath the faster you go. well at 130 mph i'm at about 3300 or so rpm :L

Hi i have an 89 ragtop. Talk about putting money in a car i have put a small fortune in mine but i do it for me not what i will sell it for x amount of yrs down the road. When people turn their heads when i go down the road you can't put a price on it. I put a new L98 bored .30 over in it,neons underneath, engine is chromed out with murals on the underside of the hood, shaved door handles with popper's,full moulded body kit no seams, stock wheels chrome plated, chineese burlwood dash, movie screens in my visor's,roll bar, hood scoop, side graphic kit which is being done as i type this and blackout's on my front and rear light's,custom steering wheel and headers. My theory is enjoy what you own and enjoy other people looking at what you own,
Rich

I hear ya Mic. By the time the ole' L98 runs out of breathing room, the race is either over or it's getting to dangerous speeds.

But for stoplight to stoplight battles, the L98 can still spank the new cars out there today. After I get my Z06 (which I'm shooting for this year), I'm going to put the 88' away, tear it down and put a stroker motor in there. :beer

you'll love the Z06 :) i came close to buying one last year but elected not too because i'm still not hip on the body style but she had gobs and gobs of power :D well atleast i thought they did...hehe i raced one from 60-125 mph one night and thought i was gonna get owned but he only beat me by 3 car lengths! should of seen the look on him and his buddy's face when we pulled off the hwy and came to a light.........PRICELESS :D

I chose to spend, what turns out to be about $18k on my '84, versus $40k (then) on a Z06. I can take most Z's, unless the owner has spent mondo dinero on it. The value is not there if I sell it, but other value is, for me. Now, my car is virtually new, inside and out, from stem to stern. I also spent on MY schedule, not some bank's.

How do you measure in $$$ the pleasure you get by owning something you love??

Forget about the resale value, its yours: spend the money.

I spent more on mine than I can resell it for.

Owning a Corvette is not a business venture, its pleasure, like spending $$$ on a vacation [you can't resell a vacation].

I bought a 88 coupe at auction for $3700 and figured I would fix it up for a few bucks and sell it and make some money. Wrong. I now have about $5000 more into the car and will probably spend another $1000. I will never get $10,000 for the car no matter how good it looks but I don't care. I have come to respect and enjoy the car a lot and when the bang is not enough I'll up the ante to about 400+ HP and enjoy again. My point is do what makes you feel good and be happy don't worry.

Best regards,
Gerry

I'm with most of these guys. If it is fun then do it. I just bought my first Vette at 56 years old (I always wanted one) an 84. It's in perfect shape and had new paint. I put new interior and replaced the broken Bose with a killer Kenwood/Infinity system.

I also have a new Chevy 1500 HD four door pickup. I can't get enough of driving the Corvette. So my truck sits.

And...I race a 67 Camaro in NHRA Super Pro/Super Street. You don't want to know how much I have in it that I will never get back, but I can afford it, I like it so I'm gonna do it.

BTW: I'm new to this Corvette world. If someone will explain the term "midyear" as it relates to Corvette's, I'll tell you how to degree a cam with half your brain tied behind your back. :L :w

"Midyear", in the parlance of the times refers to the C2 corvette ( 1963-1967 ) and the best looking one IMHO. In this thread it refers to the middle year C4, (C4=1984-1996), you figure what the middle is as I have heard various different opinions.

Congratulations on your vette, I also bought my first last year and now I have 2 and counting.

Best regards,
Gerry

I got it, thanks. Seems like Chevrolet changed each and every Corvette during a "mid year" and are going to do it again. Of course there are more "mid years" than the first year of a decade.

I just love reading everyone's own version of what makes their Corvette special. Man I sure can relate. I have had my 92 Quasar Blue coupe for now over 2 years and I still love to walk out into the garage and amaze at what a beautiful machine she truly is. You know how People Magazine has that sexiest guys rating every year. I know because my wife buys it..hehe. Anyway, when I drive my car, I'm the sexiest, sleekest, badest guy in the world. The car transforms me from everyday Joe to Joe...bling bling. My neighbor always says to me every time he sees me washing her "man, that car keeps getting nicer everytime I see it. The great thing about the corvette world is experiencing it for the rest of our lives!

I am like Dave. I always wanted one and could never find the money to get it, now I can. Even though it's 20 years old, I feel like I'm driving a brand new one. What a rush.

But even with that nothing, I mean nothing, compares with the feeling I get when I let go of the transbrake button in my 10 second Camaro. It's the most fun you will ever have with your clothes on. :Twist

Dave, seeing your response brought to mind something from the book, Corvette: Portrait of A Legend by Richard Langworth, from the chapter, "The Marketing of The Chevrolet Corvette: Fiberglass Fantasy, a chapter focusing on the advertising aspect. The ad copy reads as follows:
Corvette owners are not necessarily the most carefree people in the world, but there are moments when every Corvette driver must think himself thrice blest. Here's a car that, more than any other, has an uncanny ability to erase the day's cares and woes and whisk its driver far, far away. Turn on the key, engage first gear and step on it: Goodbye office, hello better things in life. We'll make no attempt to analyze the chemistry of such a phenomenon; it's all blurred by things like the feeling of the wind on your face, the sound of the Corvette exhaust, the cyclone surge of a truly great V8 engine. We will be more than happy, however, to direct you to your nearest Chevrolet dealer to sample a Corvette. Look at it, sit in it, drive it, and you'll find that we haven't exaggerated a bit. We couldn't exaggerate these things if we tried.
