Looking at a 66 roadster. VIN is correct for year. Trim tag has following

Style 66 467
Trim 414
A - 4627 Body
976 Paint

What does 467 tell me?
What does A - 4627 tell me?

I can decipher the rest.

Thanks.

467 - convertible

437 would be coupe

A - A.O.Smith-built body, not S for St. Louis
I'm not sure about the 4627.

Thanks, and that's one nice 67 you have.

What about on a '65, where after Style it shows I9 (maybe 19), then 467 for convertible?

4,627 body built by AOS

Thanks and one more quick ? Engine stamp on a 65 reads F0603HP, indicating Flint, June 3rd 327/300 auto according to my black book. Isn't 6/3 early for manufacture on an engine for any year?

what's the build date of the car? than you can determine if the engine date casting is appropiate

Barry,

Don't have build date, but have VIN 194675S121668. I know there is a way to estimate build from the VIN, but is there another way? Am I correct that 0603 translates to June 03?

Barry, Here's a liitle more info. Trim tag says Style I9 (might be 19). Would that mean 9th month of production, and day 9?

If so, does that mean that some years the trim tag Syle indicated model year of the car, and other years it gave month and day of build?

Whew! Just when I think I understand, it gets confusing again.

well, the link I use to use that gave me the b-day of the car based on the VIN is no longer up. :(
others will chime that that have the book that can tell you the day the car was built.
Best I can tell is that based on the VIN it was built sometime in May of '66.

Thanks again. May 66 build date would mean that 0603 on the engine code would mean it was not an original engine.

i'm not positive but I think on the casting date codes the "F" means June and than followed by the day and the year making the date on the engine June 6, 1963

I may be very wrong though so you are best waiting for someone else more knowlegable than me to chime in

That's a LATE in the model year engine assembly date of June 3, although it conflicts with the production number of 21,668 which rolled off the line in mid May 1966. That engine was assembled after the car was in the dealership. Unless you posted the VIN wrong.

There is another code on the trim tag, that has no identifier - it is a letter followed by one or two numbers - post that too, it is the body built date code.

ctjackster,

VIN is posted correctly. Immediately following "STYLE" is I9

Doesn't that indicate May 9 build? If so, its NOM.

Did Chevy change the style code from year to year. ON some I know it just indicates model year, like 66.

Only other codes I can see on the tag is stamped just above the STYLE. Looks like Z21?

here is a nice 66 Vette trim tag tutorial, the sections of the trim tag linked here have linked explantions:

http://www.corvette.net/tech-13.htm

now, see the "C15" data on the tag? is that where yuo see the I9? In 66, I=May, so that is your body build date code of May 9. This lines up nicely with your car's ultimate birthday of mid-May, which is calculated from the production number portion of your VIN - 21668. As noted, it's an A.O. Smith car, so a one week or so lag between body build date and final off the line birthday is typical

can I ask one simple question? Is that VIN production umber on the engine stamp pad, the one where you see the engine assembly date of F0603? (That's F as in Flint, by the way.) Should look like "6121668" with the first "6" denoting the model year.

Based on what you have advised thus far, yes I certainly agree that this is a NOM

ctjackster,

Thanks, that helps. Check out ebay item # 4568008559 and you can scroll the pictures to see the trim tag. Althougth the I9 is a little out of place. This car is advertised as numbers matching, but given the build and engine dates, it ain't so.

It's 5121668. Thanks again, now I know what the first digit is for. Doesn't that make this very suspicious, or very special?! If it is a 65 engine, why would it have a date of 6/3, after build date of car?

Either guys are faking small blocks because of the big money, or this car sat around waiting for it's engine, or it got a correctly coded replacement engine after build???

No prob Barry. Nice car you got there.

A little advice from a guy who id just slightly ahead of you "wrenchwise".. The guy who taught me how to work on cars 20 years ago said, "Mark, take it apart, then just put it back together exactly the opposite. Other than that, it's pretty simple". Other than some hints, torque and stuff like that, his advice has been good. Cost me a couple bucks here and there on stuff I broke, but not that much - and the hands on education was well worth it. Combine that with a forum like this and you can make majic happen.

I agree, with the people on here I'm sure I can do a lot of things to the car but the problem today was mostly having a big time contraint. I couldn't risk doing anything that interferred with my being able to get the car back to the paint shop in the morning tomorrow. I'll try again after Carlisle when I have more time

ok, I see the problem now - you identified this as a 66, this is a 65 Vette.

ok, so the VIN per the tag is for a 65 vert, 194675S121668.

for 1965 model year, a production number of 21668 equates with a "birthday" of like June 4, 5 or 6 (I do not have a Corvette birthday book handy).

the body build code is NOT I9, that is a part of the style code, the body build code per the trim tag is some letter I cannot read followed by "21" Suspect the letter is J for May

Now THIS is the money shot:

663971_21.jpg

I think that could be the original engie (unless restamped of course)
