The dealer is going to repair my radiator (96LT4 48k miles) by reusing the alum core & attaching new tanks (plastic?). This is under extended warranty (not GM). The warranty has 4 years 48k miles to run so he must have faith in this repair.

I was surprised that he won't replace the whole thing.

Anyone have any experience with this repair?

Thanks!

If it was because of a leak the core rarely leaks unless damaged. It is not uncommon for the tanks to leak where they bond to the core BECAUSE they are plastic.

Do you know how they bond the tanks to the core, crimp, "glue" heat bond?

Thanks.

I don't know for sure but I think its like an epoxy process. Something I'm sure a radiator shop should do since the cooling system operates under pressure.

I replaced mine last spring and have done several over the past two years......it is always the same story......the gasket in the hot side tank gives after a few years.......the radiator core has crimp tabs on the side which are used to crimp the plastic side tanks to the core using a rubber or silicone gasket as a seal......there is a repair proceedure and a tool to crimp in the Helms manual..........I just bought a new radiator from radiator.com......was $150 plus $6 for overnight shipping.......works fine and fit perfectly
