Hello,
I'm trying to tighten the radio. Its seem loose behing the panel. I have undone the panel/bezel, but I can't get the bezel to come all the way out to get a look at the radio behind it.
It there a trick?
Thanks,

Did you remove the "nuts" on the radio control shafts?
They are usually not typical hex nuts but round nuts with slots in them. A pair of long nose pliers will work to unscrew them.

Boy do I feel like a dummy. No I didn't remove the nuts because I failed to notice them. I will try again today. Thank you for your help.

Hello,
I removed the nuts from the shaft knobs. The only other thing I have removed is the four screws. I can get the bezel out just a little, but that's all. Can you tell me what I am missing. Is there more than the 4 screws that are obivous?

I think your 80' is the same as my 78'. There are a couple screws that hold the gage/radio cluster to the tunnel console. Note also that there is a small bracket that supports the back of the radio on the right side, attaches to the trannis tunnel.

There are two small nut under knobs of the radio. under the radio, they hold the bottom of the bezel down. PG.

Well, I got the bezel off. The radio looks like it is attached to the mounting bracket ONLY on the right side. The left side has NO support. It is not sturdy and is wobbly. Seems like it should be supported on both sides. Is this the way its suppose to be, or is something wrong?
Thanks, Glenn

That's all there is. Just mounted with the control shaft nuts at the bezel and ONE support on the pass side.

401 Do yourself a big favor and order the 1980 assembly instruction manual (AIM). The AIM will show you how the cars were assembled at St. Louis.

Worth the cost of a copy.

Well I finally got it out. Thanks for the info. Where would be the best place to order the manual?

Thank You, Glenn

any of the corvette part distributors sell them..:upthumbs

The right side bracket is what the factory put in. I replaced the bracket with a piece of heaver gauge metal of the same dimensions, which helped to give more stability to the radio mounting. If I recall the two round nuts on the front mounting should have a flat washer under each to provide more area of contact between the nuts and the opening in the dash panel, increasing radio mounting stability & reducing the chance of it coming loose with car vibrations.

Wow...what are the chances this thread got resurrected and it's almost exactly what I'm looking for?!? I love this place! :thumb

So, this bracket that the radio mounts to...I must've removed mine years ago 'cause it ain't there anymore. And slap my hand because I still don't have an AIM. Referencing the diagram duke94 posted, is the radio bracket that part between the boxed 5 and 3 in the diagram?

Mr. Chuck, can you give me some more detail on the bracket you created? You happen to have any pics of it prior to installation? I don't expect you to pull apart your dash to take a pic of it now :L

(This is my winter project. I'm replacing my hacked up center cluster with a poorly cutout DIN with an original bezel and a N.O.S. post-mount radio that has a Line-In connector. It also gave me the opportunity to touch up the silver painted trim on the vents and bezel itself.)

Here's a pic I had from my 78SA

For my white79 I simply made one from 1/8" X 3/4" aluminum stock. Holes are 2 3/4" apart.
