I'm in the process of replacing the feed cable in antenna motor on my '81. Got motor out (original AC DELCO) without too much problem. Unfortunately, the middle mast section is broken (lower 2" still in lower master section). Is this unit history or can the middle section be replaced somehow. Brian

A one time, years ago Chevy had just the replacement mast assemblies, but if I remember correctly they were no longer available, they were tricky to rewind around the motor pulley and often resulted in kinking the nylon shaft. The choices now are either after market, like I did or see if Chevy has an entire antenna assy that fits the 81. I am really happy with the after market one I installed. One glick, was the instructions that came with it said it was a direct replacement, not entirely true when it came to the electrical hook-up. Once I figured out a reversing relay was part of the antenna assy and a wiring modification was required to by-pass the OEM control relay in the jack compartment, it continues to work correctly after one year in service. The wiring changes went fairly smoothly since I already had all the carpeting out and the center console removed as part of the entire re-carpeting and rear deck compartment door assy replacement project. Also helpful was my background in electrical systems analysis / repair from 12yrs in US Naval Aircraft maintenance.

kit

I bought the kit, installed it without trouble and she worked fine. Ran a bead of sealant on the outside case halves as insurance from water.
The antenna goes up when you turn the radio on, down when you turn the radio off. Same thing happens with the key if the radio stays in the on position. good luck, mike j
