I've got a 1978 Pace Car that is ready for Top Flight judging. I took this car to Kissimmee and had it judged and recieved second flight. The only reason it didn't get Top Flight was some blue paint on the vacuum hoses and some rust on the undercarriage.

This car has about 1100 miles on it. All pieces are original, except the battery. The air cleaner to the original invoice are there. Financial issues are forcing the sale of this car. I have the judges sheets showing how close this car is to the top.

I really do need to sell it. There isn't a mark on this car and it will drive anywhere. It had been stored for 24 years in humidity controlled conditions. I have put the miles on it recently taking it to local car shows etc.

Price = $23,500.00

This car is alloriginal and runs like the new car that it is.:Steer

Ed - You may want to list L48 or L82, auto or 4sp and if the decals are on the car or in the box. Was your car this one?

I hope to buy a Pace Car later this year, but too bad timing is always an issue. If you noticed someone drooling over the Pace Cars in the display hall, that was me:D.

Pace Car or Pace Maker

Guy, or should I say 00-82,

This car has you written all over it. Guys our age have to make these moves fast - the clock is running. Don't worry about the timing or the finances - you can always sell the dreaded "Delorean". It should bring top dollar as it has the original "flux capacitor".

No that was a friend of mine though. His car is not original at all and has 59k miles on it.

It's very nice but has a lot of wrong parts, such as windshield,exhaust,t-tops. But a nice car. Mine was in back of it. I do have the decals on it and it is a L48 automatic with an 8 track tape am/fm. I have the original invoice, build sheet warranty book and owners book along with the instruction card on how to operate the tilt steering.

I put for sale signs on it yesterday and it is getting a lot of attention but no sale as of yet. I believe that this car can qualify for a Bowtie car there isn't much to do to get the top honors for this car.

Remember, their only original once!

I remember your car now - what a beauty!. Good luck with the sale.

Very, very hard for me to believe an 1,100mi car did not get Top Flight? My very original '80 with 91,000mi got Top Flight in Cincinnati,Ohio in '99!!!

Paul,i have to agree with you.Considering NCRS TOP FLIGHT judgingis based more on originality than condition,a 1,100 mile vette should get it quite easily. Some rust and blue overspray should not be enough to stop you from getting TOP FLIGHT.There had to be other areas on the car to stop you from getting it.What are the comments on the judging sheets?....JERRY

Jerry, actually the NCRS judging is originality AND condition. Once an item is deemed to be original then the condition points are evaluated. I too find it difficult to believe that an 1100 mile car doesn't score Top Flight. Surface rust and paint overspray won't do it alone unless the paint overspray was from a repaint. If the car is repainted and it isn't a good repaint, THEN you might be able to lose enough points to get Second Flight.

On the other hand, a Second Flight at your first judging is something to be proud of. You should be happy.

Those are great points and I was very upset to say the least. I figure that NCRS "the organization" want it's members to succeed. But some of the judges I had were pretty sad. The two ladies inspecting the interior giged me for a small pebble in the carpet!!!!!! Also the carpet on the back of the seats, where it was installed by a human!!!!!!! was a little off center. They got me for that. My friend was holding me back. I was going to remove them from my car. They are Elaine Renner and Donna Hanner. Elaine was pretty cool but the Donna chick was awful.
As a matter of fact she was reprimanded by Thom Warren for being excessive. I was right there when this happened. He told her to wrap it up now!! I hear they get around 45 min per car and she was on mine for over an hour. She even busted me for dust on my jack!!!!

I have the judging sheets, and the chassis guys went down the list with surface rust. Point after point after point. Actually they spent very little time with the car. They saw rust and busted my azz. My friend who helped me get the car ready said to leave the rust alone. They expect some rust under there because of the age of the car. WRONG!!

I was later consolled by the judging team leader but I just told him never mind that I was too upset to talk to him. His explanation was that 78 Pace Cars have been the most frequently judged car in NCRS. My feeling is if that is the case then they should be able to get this right.

Here are the scores:
Operations= 708 of 760 Couldnt get the windshield washer to work (-25)
8 points for no am reception on the radio. 5 points for no lamp on the rear defogger. I didn't know about the bonus points for fire extinguisher NCRS decal and battery switch.

Mechanical=1044 of 1120 4 pt ded for too shiney valve covers,5pt ded for discolleration of carb. base,28 pt ded for blue paint on asst areas. They were looking at these areas with an ultraviolet light. I couldn't see this with the naked eye and stardard light.18 pt ded for engine paint too shiney. (yes I touched up the engine)
8 pt ded for signes of fuel leak stain.

Chassis=555 of 646. 29 pt ded for rust in various areas. 10pt ded for service replacement mufflers.

Exterior=1141 of1179. 20pt ded for decals on car. Some small ded for rust on screw heads

Interior=735 of 805. The interior is the best area of the car!!!! Gotm hit pretty good for not a Delco Freedom battery. I have a Delco but not the Freedom. 20pt ded for the battery. They ded pts in almost every category for the interior. Usually 1 pt. but it was relentless.

That's the story. As you can see it won't take much. It was my first time and I wasn't prepared properly, I guess.:cry

When I had my 32000 mile 72 LT1 judged at the Atlanta regional almost three years ago, the judges were beyond reproach. I questioned two items and was able to supply proof of their originality and got my points back. The interior judges, both ladies (neither of the two you mentioned) were excellent. They provided me with details that I didn't know. All of the judges were fair and open to suggestions.

I am sorry to hear about your experience but, as you said, if the one judge was give a rebuke, that should help you realize that rep-entering judging in a different location or even move up a notch to Regional, may reap benefits.

IMO, the points deduction sounds excessive. I don't judge interiors but I have done some local chapter and regional mechanical and chassis judging.

Well, from my past judging experience '78 Pace Cars/Silver Anniversaries seem to come out of the woodwork in almost "impeccable" condition(the ultra low mileage ones like yours)and I think these cars kinda set a "higher bar". I know it should'nt be this way, but many times it is. I've judged '78 Pace & Silver Anniversary cars with 4, 120, 530, 810miles on them, so I guess it's kind of expected the cars will score amongst the very highest.

The event I participated in was a regional. It was in Kissimmee, Fl last month.
If I still have the car in April, Ill go to Stone Mountain and try again.

I will be having a Silver '68 Coupe also judged at Stone Mountain. I bought this car a month ago(it is still down in Atlanta), have'nt even seen it yet, and am taking it for judging just out of curiousity sake on "how well it'll do". If it gets Top Flight, fine. If it gets 2nd Flight, fine.
