Really BAD morning!

Barry,

after all your kind comments on "LADY" and then to hear/see you suffered a loss on your new baby! I would heart broken, as you are! I believe I would be in jail, like others have mentioned.

Agreed. I think Barry showed great restraint.

Hi c5vetter

well, at least we know that when I drop my baby back off in Gaithersurg on Sat she will be in great hands! I can't imagine a better place to have her for even a relatively simple job such as this. Especially after seeing the care they have put into LADY I have great confidence that Keith and Tony will have mine back to her "old" self soon enough.
As for restraint, belive me, I did do quite a bit of yelling for a minute or two before I calmed down enough to deal with things.
I can't wait to see LADY on Sat and all the progress made on her in the month since I've seen her last. Any chance you will be stopping in there on Sat? It would be great to meet you and I can show you my baby also even if she isn't currently looking her best :(

thanks for the nice words but believe me, the first minute or so there wasn't much in way of restraint. Until I calmed myself down I'm sure I was quite a sight standing in the middle of a busy road yelling my head off at this guy and his wife. And than to find out he was on his way to his brothers funeral.........I calmed down real fast realizing my problem really isn't all that bad compared to other things in life no matter how upsetting it may seem at the time.

Barry,

I feel your pain. I had a 73 that I had been restoring for about 9mths a real labor of Love. To make a long story short...about a week after we finished the resto Me and my first wife thought we would drive it to dinner for our anniversary, while en-route to the resturant we were sitting at a red light when a truck pulling a low boy trailer decided to get into the turning lane and turn behind us. The only problem being that he didn't give himself enough room to make the trun with trailer and it rode completely over the back of the vette and tore the complete back panel, including all of the light assemblies and bumpers completely away from the car. I could see it coming but was powerless to do anything about it.

Made me sick, (should have saw that it was a sign of how my first marriage would go) needless to say dinner and the anniversary festivities sucked big time.

Took another 5 weeks to fix the damage.

Don't let the insurance dick you around, this happened back in 1980 but they still tried to minimize the damage.

Good Luck

wow! I feel bad enough about the damage on mine, but it's nothing like you suffered! I hope both of you were ok at the time!
When I bought mine just under a month ago it had just completed a full frame-off restoration done by the previous owner - supposeably took him 4 years I was told. The car looked great so it makes it that much worst but if you did the restoration yourself on your '73 I feel even worst for you as it makes it even more personal to see your own hard work and time and sweat destroyed.
Yep, sure makes you feel sick when it happens, and like you I saw it coming and could do nothing about it except watch him keep coming at me..........knowing it was about to happen was as bad as when the hit finally came. It's like everything was in slow motion but with no control!
As for the insurance, i'm glad the car will be back into a very excellent restoration shop when the insurance adjuster comes to see it. They should be helpful in assuring that the insurance company understands the value of a fully restored collector car and the need to get the repairs done fully and correctly and not halfa**ed.

I really CAN feel your pain! Some years back I had just purchased a very nice 63 split window w/powerglide. Had it only a day when I became first in line (on a curved merge approach to a major highway) at a "yield" sign, with my brakelights on, waiting for a chance to scoot into heavy traffic. Thought I saw an opening and started to move, but then decided there wasn't enough space and stopped. The gal in the car behind me assumed I was off & running when my brake lights went out, so she gunned it and THEN looked over her shoulder at the traffic... yep, she ran right up over my tail and came to rest in the middle of my rear deck. But, I had to admit (only to myself, of course) that it was partly my fault.

PS: years later, I was on the other end of the same sort of accident. I had just rented a car at JFK airport (NY) and drove over to the freeway ramp, still on JFK property. A car in front of me was accelerating, well-down the long on-ramp to the busy freeway, and I was accelerating maybe 6 car lengths behind him when I looked over my shoulder to check the freeway traffic, then turned my head back to see the car ahead much too close and rapidly slowing, with NO brake lights. I couldn't avoid him. The occupants of the other car, another rental, had just arrived on a flight from Paris and spoke no English, but I surmised that the driver wasn't used to automatic, forgot and tried to downshift it into 3rd like a standard tranny, hitting "PARK". Their damage wasn't too bad so they continued on to Montreal after we waited an hour for a cop to come to take the accident report... I then had to take mine back to Hertz and trade it for another, sheepishly (and amazingly, they GAVE me another!).

regarding your SWC, it wasn't your fault - it's the person behind to make sure they leave enough room and watch out. Except of course in my case when the person comes BACKWARDS at you! LOL
D**m, only had it one day too. That story is pretty painful. I hope you were able to rebuild her properly.

On the 2nd accident maybe a good way to look at it is that at least they put the car into PARK (that's bad enough) instead of wanting to drive fast and they put it into "R" for RACING! LOL

Barry,

I'm hoping to get there around 11am or so. my plan is to leave here around 8 or 9 than than drive down. it's about a 2 hour drive plus stopping for a quick breakfast on the road.
hope to see you there.

I would have lost it with the other driver.

Sorry to hear about it. It happens, but when it happens to you, it just really sucks! Be sure to get it repaired correctly. Take your time and move forward from there.

Remember, many many more driving days are ahead of you in that car!

ENJOY THE RIDE.

Hi Bill

yep, I plan on getting my Baby all fixed up just like her old self again and than enjoying her. it's all those driving days ahead of me I'm looking forward to. :)
The car is going into a shop that is known for the excellent quality of their work so I have all the confidence that they will get her back into the proper condition correctly and perfectly.

Barry

Sorry to hear about the damage, don't worry it can be fixed and it sounds like you are putting it in good hands.

yes, I think she will be in great hands for the repair :)

My concern at this point is AFTER the repair.......I might be too scared to have her leave the safety of my garage. LOL

Barry,

don't worry about it - I will be driving LADY after putting lotta $ into her! Zora designed these "babies" to be driven

Oh, i'll be driving BABY (i think that's my new name for her now! LOL) plenty, i'm sure i'll just be extra cautious of the other idiots on the road for now on when i'm in her.

You are going to drive LADY? Good for you. After all this work and from what I read your goals for her are in the Judging I was afraid she would be a trailer queen. Nothing wrong with trailer queens either, but like you, I want to be able to drive my 'Vette.
If I only wanted to look at it I would have saved a ton of money and bought a poster instead :L

Barry,

will do the NCRS circuit and Bloomington on a trailer, but then LADY will be driven to Carlisle (about 1 1/2 hours) and to Ocean City for my clubs annual event (about 2 hours)

An event in Ocean City??!! how tempting for a great drive on a nice day with my wife. She is always asking for a nice day that we can go down to the shore. ( "Down the Shore" is Jersey slang for the beach! LOL - i'm originally from Jersey)
Does your club allow people and cars from other clubs to come and be a spectator or participate? The beach and corvettes, what a great combination. Only thing else it needs is pretty women.......and in bikinis too! :D
