in the '63 shop manual, pages 4-3,4-4, it says that after removing the spindle drive flange on the rear axle, remove the brake drum and pull the spindle out of spindle support. since i've never done one before, is it that easy to remove the spindle?

Nope

I believe if you had one of the first produced without press-fit bearings, and it had never been modified to the later press-fit, it could feasibly be that easy. But, there probably aren't any of those left.

If you're thinking of servicing the rear wheel bearings, this is a major undertaking best left to the specialty shops (Bair's or Van Steel, for a couple) who do this work on a recurring basis, in my opinion.
