I have recently discovered that my rear brakes are not working. I discovered this when I put the car up on ramps, hit the brakes, and it did not stop rolling, even though it was only rolling at around 1/2 a mile an hour. I have since replaced the master cylinder, replaced the fluid, and bled the system. The brakes up front did seem to respond well to this, but the brear brakes are still not working at all. Before I rip out all the hoses and replaced the rear calipers, I was wondering if anone knew what the most likely culprits to this issue are. Thank you for all of your help. :)

Had the same problem on a truck I bought. The PO had disconnected the brake line and capped it, the wheel cylider leaked and I guess he didn't want to fix it. Another possibility is the rubber hose may have a blockage and is not allowing fluid to flow through. Keep at it, you'll find it eventually!

If you get clear new brake fluid from the rear brake calipers the lines are not blocked. Did you check the rear brake calipers visualy when somebody else is hitting the brake?

Greetings Peter

Just went through that with the '72. Here's what I found when I took the calipers apart. All pistons looked like this one. At some time the calepers were fitted with SS sleeves and my guess is silicone fluid used. Then ownership may have changed and regular fluid added and it must have had little use until I acquired it. That's a guess as I have no idea what this gunk was, it looked and felt like sugar.

When I started to find the brake problem the first thing was a splice in the front to rear line at the cross member. It had been tighten until it was nearly blocked, so the back brakes had little or no movement when used. Also the right rear hose was solid with the same crap and rust.

All is well now after new caliper kits, hoses, lines, pads, and parking brake cables, shoes, backed up with SS adjusters and activators.

One leak which was some of that transparent crap under one of the caliper lip seals.

rear brake problem

I had the same problem on my 81 new master cylinder 2 new rear brake calibers, still no brake fluid to the rear brakes. I finally spent the money and bought a new proportioning valve. That fixed the problem.
