rear diff. oil change

does anyone know if there is a drain plug on rear diff.on housing or do you have to take rear plate off to change gear oil any help appr. 1990 L98 auto

the best way is to get a pump, remove the big allen screw on the right side of the case, pump the old gear oil out then pump new gear oil in and close up.

I think you have to add that limited slip additive.

I drilled my diff from the bottom just a little left of center and threaded it for a drain plug. I believe others have done this and there may be a thread on it. Be sure to flush the diff well if you do this. Vetteboy86 is right you need to get the additive from gm to add to the differential. oil.

I pumped it out and pumped it in, DO NOT FORGET THE Limited Slip Additive
There is a plug on the Pass side of the diff about half way up the housing, I forget the size but use a big A** allen key to get the plug out.

you can get a hand pump from any auto parts store for only a few bucks

yeah i used Lucas special gear oil and no additive was needed it said on bottle but also needed a little more so i got some Castro for limited slip rear ends. funny some people never ever change this stuff and no problems. i guess us corvette guys really like doing something if anything just to be with our vette??

It is called preventive maintenance. If at all possible I like to avoid breakdowns on the road. Hoses , belts, etc every three yrs. If it looks like it could break I replace it. Much cheaper to do that then getting flatbedded home. I do this with all my cars.

got you, i am the same way. but lets face it, corvette guys like taking care of our corvettes! if i didn't enjoy working on it i would have never got it. but ever time i take the top off on a sunny day and bunch it, life is GOOD

yeah, got all the stuff i got from the corvette show in Carlisle in her now and she looks alot more respectable inside and out!! seats are looking pretty good and carpet too. just need some tunes!! took her took work today, fun how every one likes to look at them (corvette) when they see them driving around! heck even my bosses boss talked to me about my vette, we had a pretty good exchange about cars, he has BB chevy Chevelle at home. thats never happen with him before, hes a keep to him self kind of guy. hope no ones going to think i was brown noising!!!:L
