I need a new rear end for my 1979 Corvette. Any thoughts on what ratio to get? My car is being completely restored. Should I get a rebuilt rear end or can I get one off ebay or from a parted out Corvette. I don't want any troubles with it or have to rebuild it myself.

I have my diff out and apart. The stub axles had worn against the spyder gear shaft. So I took the whole thing apart and ordered all the parts including a new rear end cover. It's a lot of work, some real technical, if you don't have the equipment or expertise. After all was said and done, I could have got an exchange rearend for a little more than I have in the parts. I enjoy the mechanical end of it, I have been certified by ASE, and ran a shop in my earlier years, so I have had experiance in doing most all work. If you don't, IMHO,then get an exchange unit, and pop for a new cover.

That depends on what you intend to use the car for, what kind of tranny, what size of tires, what cam... etc etc. :W

Since you're doing a complete restoration, it would serve you well to do some benchtop preparation. Decide what your objectives are and select parts to achieve those objectives. If you want some constructive criticism on your selections or some guidance on what you're forgetting (trust me-- it'll happen) then post away! :)

Take your list of parts and start looking at prices. Budget plays an important role, especially if you're married and want to stay that way!! :L

Tell me about it. I'm repairing/restoring my rear suspension, and I'm already 10% over budget and have not even finished buying parts yet. I'm married with 2 little boys and would like to stay that way. Fortunately my wife says I've earned the right to spend some money on the vette...makes it easier.

In my case, I restored a vehicle for my wife (1984 Jeep CJ7) before I restored my Vette. The brownie points I won from the former almost made up for the cash I dropped for the latter. Almost.
